I began my nursing career in the state of Florida in 1993 working on an acute care step down unit. During my second year as a nurse, the director at my facility resigned unexpectedly. As the only registered nurse on the unit, I was asked to fill the position as interim director of nursing until a permanent director could be hired. I accepted the position in order to grow as a nurse and benefit from the new experience. Taking on such a position was difficult given my lack of knowledge and practical experience, yet it allowed me to start fresh with no preconceived ideas. I studied the literature available, and utilized the guidance of prior nurse leaders to structure my decisions. The first year was very arduous and there were many times I wanted to quit. However, this experience taught me to be a good nurse leader and how important it is to involve the entire care team in order to provide holistic and meaningful care to the patient.

The implementation of the morning meeting allowed me as a leader to request, and listen to the ideas of my staff. I realized that each one of them brought their own unique specialty to the table and I wanted us to function as a united team, not just to improve the survey, but to improve the conditions of living for our patients, and the morale of staff. I reviewed the Long Term Care Survey Manual for the state of Florida and the Florida Health Services Manual, then myself and all the morning meeting team reviewed the tags received by the facility during the survey.
