Personal Narrative: How To Be An Effective Leader

Superior Essays
The more time I spend in a leadership position the more I learn how to be an effective leader. As a young adult (fresh out of high school) I was an assistant manager at a local fast food restaurant. I thought people would do what I wanted them to do because I was the assistant manager. This worked for a short time but as they began to know me, their attitudes changed and they began to take advantage of my kindness. Some people felt I was showing favoritism and employees began making excuses for not wanting to perform certain positions, nor did they want to work with anyone but their buddies. I began juggling the positions to their liking. This did not last very long before everyone else began complaining and as a result, production began …show more content…
Sometimes I had to be a mother and instruct the young ladies on the need for under garments or the need for wearing shorts that did not show their bottom when they Then we look at the actual work description. Often I actually worked alongside the families helping to build the homes, was record keeper for the homeowners, took care of timesheets for the construction supervisor, filled in as construction manager for 1 ½ years, ordered materials, did inspections with the local building inspector, coordinated schedules for the contracted work, put together loan applications, kept state reports current, worked through the State of Ohio with the foreclosure prevention program and kept the peace between all of them. During all of these opportunities for me to grow, me leadership skill were definitely put to the test. Success was when we had final inspections and the homeowner moved in their new home. While some were not successful and would lose their homes, I had to remember this was not personal. I could not save …show more content…
Whether seeing someone succeed on their job or grow spiritually blesses me. It’s not about what I do to help them along their way but is seeing their growth and success. People need to know that someone genuinely cares about them and their situation. Matthew 25:36-41 tells us how the Father expects us to care for his people and the consequences of caring and not caring. (NKJV) Telling someone to get a job to meet their needs is not enough, we need to help them develop their skills to qualify for the job. Once they get the job we need to help them hone their skills for advancement. God gives us gifts and abilities not that we should keep them to ourselves but to share and make a difference in the world. We cannot stand by and see the people on the street corner with a sign that says, ‘Veteran-hungry and broke. Anything will help.’ I am compelled to direct that person to agencies that can help him or her. Realizing there are many con-artist in the world, if I buy them something to eat or decide to give them money (which I rarely do), I will have done what God requires me to do. It is on them whether they use the money for drugs or whether they walk away and get in a

In today’s society, people are swept up in the wrath of being too prideful, or become greedy. These deadly sins deaden our religious life, causing us to distance ourselves from God’s path. Everyone must dig deep into their spiritual lives, and lend a helping hand to those who need it the most. Whether it’s simply having a conversation with a homeless person, donating money, or volunteering at a daycare for the destitute children, these charitable acts can make a huge difference in someone’s life. My service learning experience was an eye opener for me, and it made me realize how privileged and blessed I truly am.…

The Leadership Challenge discusses “strengthen (ing) resilience” (pp 206). I am the kind of person who wants all of my ducks in a row so when one or two are out of line, I get flustered not to mention overwhelmed to the point wanting to quit. The past few years have been one of loss in various ways; my father’s passing, my beloved pet for nine years passing, my husband’s illness, the loss of our house as well as the loss of my husband’s and partner’s business. Even though we are still reeling with the impact of what we have been hit with, we continue to encourage one another emotionally to look ahead, not dwell on the past.…

Another time that I have taken a leadership role is when our sideline cheer team had a booth at the Water Festival. I took the morning shift and when I got there I had all of the materials but only me and my coach had shown up and she still had to head back to the school to get the things we were selling. So while she went and got the stuff I stayed at the booth and lead it by myself until my teammates came and helped. I decided to be a leader in this situation because I knew that it was what I had to do to help my coach out so that she could get her stuff done. I believe that by leading the booth for a few hours I helped my coach accomplish what she had to do for the day and helped my team by sitting at the booth fundraising to help pay for some of our debts.…

My leadership experience began when my supervisor and his colleagues had an important meeting to attend and had no one sitting in on the office for intake office hours, so he asked me and another intern, Isaiah, to sit in from 9 AM-3PM. My supervisor taught us the main component of this position in 10 minutes. At first, I was nervous because I was new to the agency and it was my first time performing front desk duties. But after a couple of clients I began to get more comfortable and confident with the process because I had performed similar duties when I was in my cubicle. At this moment I felt like I was a leader because I was put in a position where I had minimum training, but still could take control of the office duties, and according to my supervisor, my performance level was beyond expectations.…
