Often I actually worked alongside the families helping to build the homes, was record keeper for the homeowners, took care of timesheets for the construction supervisor, filled in as construction manager for 1 ½ years, ordered materials, did inspections with the local building inspector, coordinated schedules for the contracted work, put together loan applications, kept state reports current, worked through the State of Ohio with the foreclosure prevention program and kept the peace between all of them. During all of these opportunities for me to grow, me leadership skill were definitely put to the test. Success was when we had final inspections and the homeowner moved in their new home. Other successes were when mortgage lenders worked with homeowners from around the state to retain their homes. The more people we were able to help, the more word of mouth referrals we received. Helping someone qualify to get a home or helping them to stay in their home often was frustrating but the end result was worth all the effort. Whether seeing someone succeed on their job or grow spiritually blesses me. It’s not about what I do to help them along their way but is seeing their growth and success. People need to know that someone genuinely cares about them and their situation. Matthew 25:36-41 tells us how the Father expects us to care for his people and the consequences of caring and not caring. (NKJV) Telling someone to get a job to meet their needs is not enough, we need to help them develop their skills to qualify for the job. Once they get the job we need to help them hone their skills for advancement. God gives us gifts and abilities not that we should keep them to ourselves but to share and make a difference in the world. We cannot stand by and see the people on the street corner with a sign that says, ‘Veteran-hungry and broke. Anything will help.’ I am compelled to direct that person to agencies that can help him or her. Realizing there are many con-artist in the world, if I buy them something to eat or decide to give them money (which I rarely do), I will have done what God requires me to do.
