Throughout the past semester, I have had the privilege to work with Sue Sheridan in the post-anesthesia care unit(PACU) for my leadership rotation at MidMichigan medical center in Midland. The PACU was very hard to observe patterns of leadership in because every nurse almost worked independently with no real charge nurse on the unit. They all basically determined who was taking a patient based mostly on the time they came in and by simply volunteering to take a patient as they were wheeled through the OR/ PACU doors. With this being said I did observe some leadership trends relating to the OR manager and the PACU nurses. The purpose of this paper is to break down and closely observe the leadership styles of the nurses and myself when it comes…
Observations and Reflections The nurse leader I worked with that I will described was a manager who was brought into our staffing office to insure our in-house agency was correctly maintaining our staff records and to teach the staff the correct way to do this. DS was a BSN trained nurse with 20 years of nursing experience with the majority of this time in the ER as staff nurse. DS had been a manager for AAS a staffing agency that was very large and assisted in staffing in the Houston Texas area as well as providing staff to different areas of the country in times of disasters, making sure the staff had the correct credentials and training to do this. Her director allowed her to assume most of the directional management of the entire office…
The four leadership qualities that represent excellence nursing, the nurse must be knowledgeable, respect for fellow coworkers, able to effectively communicate, and are competent. The functions of nursing, nurses function as a unit. As a nurse leader, leaders are at the bedside providing care to patients when the nurse is occupied. Leaders are seen approaching patients, introducing themselves as the clinical leader, and providing services to the patient. Often leaders are seen assisting patients to the restroom, tending to loud IV machines, and assisting to re insert IVs.…
With the two roles that are compared here a non-clinical nurse administrators requires different skills than an advanced practicing nurse. Although the nurse administrator is not in direct patient care any longer, they are responsible for helping those in direct patient care utilize and follow not only the code of ethics also evidence based practice and facility policies. The nurse practitioner is directly involved with the patient and is a leader to her peers of nurses. Leadership and professionalism are two areas that the core competencies overlap, requiring excellent leadership and professionalism to all the different people within their practice and community. The differences between these two professions are position specific qualities that allow for the individual to perform their day to day daily tasks within the leadership role and return their knowledge and skills for the betterment of…
I think I would be a great W.E.B. leader because I have been in the circle of bullying many times in the past two years, and I think I could help kids who are also being bullied constantly. I also think I should be a W.E.B. leader because I am a very sociable person and I am polite to everyone. I am also very accepting, patient, tolerant, and inclusive, and I will make sure everyone gets treated the same as everyone else. I am very good in school academically. I have straight A's in every class, I have been to the state geography bee and the regional spelling bee, and I help other people in my classes if they need help.…

Nursing involves in a multifaceted practice with strong goal-oriented interventions which ensures high quality care and patient safety (Australian College of Nursing, 2015). The goal of nursing is influenced by effective nursing leadership because nurses lead and manage a workforce. Merrill (2015) stated that effective nursing leadership in health services is needed to emphasise safety and high quality care. Therefore, leadership is a significant skill of nurses in order to create vision and enable the people to work towards change (ACN, 2015). This paper will discuss the relationship between leadership and patient safety.…
Leadership in Nursing Leaders are often thought of corporate executives and administrators, political representatives, military generals, or those who are the head of an organization. Nurses are also considered leaders because they make a difference every day in the lives of their patients and patients’ families by using their knowledge to manage and meet the patient’s needs (Kelly, 2012, p. 2). Leaders are not always managers, but are individuals that inspire others and do the right thing. Nurse leaders take a certain type of person and the best way to understand that is to interview a leader about the style of leadership used, the characteristics of a leader, and how they empower their staff.…
The Merriam Webster Dictionary states “professionalism is the skill, good judgment, and polite behavior that is expected from a person who is trained to do a job well.” I would also include strong morals, ethics, honesty and commitment. Nurses are expected to display good behavior and a good attitude at all times. Nursing is a demanding but rewarding profession. As health care professionals, we care for people at their worst.…
The laissez-faire style of leadership can be effective when leading a staff of motivated, highly skilled, self-directed employees who have years of experience. Working as a clinical research nurse, this style works well. In this role, you are trained specifically on the current protocol and it is up to you to enroll the patient and maintain logs to keep the study going. It is a very independent role of nursing. In this role the manager, who is more of a mentor, oversees if the nurse has questions, but otherwise lets her do what she need to do.…

In the late 1800s the nursing profession began with a legacy known as Florence Nightingale. Florence Nightingale started the basic fundamentals of patient care which is still taught in nursing schools around the world. Her greatest legacy to the nursing profession is the fact that she elevated nursing to a higher degree of professionalism and respectability than ever before.” Nurses have come a long way since then, and have to go by the standards of practice. Nursing Councils Code of Conduct, Scopes of Nursing Practice and Competence, Code of Ethics, and American Nurses Association are just some of the required standards that are put in place to help maintain guidance on expected professional nursing behavior.…
1. My team members responded to my team leadership effectively and therefore, the outcome was positive. They mentioned that I displayed all the qualities of a team leader, as I was very effective and successful in motivating my team members and getting all the necessary work done before the deadlines. I was able to delegate the responsibilities of the assignment thoroughly and in a way that all my team members were happy based on their respected skills. The first order of business was that my job was to gather the team at a time that was convenient to everyone within the group.…
The first learning objective of the class was to study the ethical theories and be able to apply them. The readings were helpful in this instance because I think that everything that was taught can be applicable in one way or another. I have an issue with deciding on one specific theory to follow, so I think that everything that I have learned can be used. For example, the theory of egoism is something that I would have used in the past but I am now trying to move away from that mindset. Even though I may not be directly following this theory, I feel like I would be able to recognize someone who thinks this way based solely off of their actions.…
