Motivational Reflection

I have truly enjoyed my time in Dr. Nelson’s Leadership and Organizational Behavior class. This was my first graduate level course and I did not know what to expect from the coursework, the professor or my classmates. I am glad to say that the relationships built in this class have provided me with the confidence to continue on the journey of getting a masters degree and the coursework has affected the way that I carry myself at work and the way that I will approach future situations on the job. Two theories that I will use on a regular basis revolve around developing relationships with one’s supervisor and motivating one’s self and others in a positive manner; specifically through the theory of Leader- Member Exchange (LMX) and motivating others using SMART goal setting.
To start off, I need to describe my job at the United Way of Anchorage. My title is “Donor Relationship Manager” and my work is similar to that of an account representative in that I have

That means that sometimes the goals are unspoken or nebulous; like “raise as much money as we can” or “get as many employees to as we can to participate this year”. Before taking this class I knew that these types of goals were not good, but I didn’t really care because I didn’t realize the motivational power of a SMART goal, or a goal that is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time Based. United Way has goal setting worksheets for just this purpose that I have never used because the importance was not apparent to me. In particular, I will stress the specific and time based goals at my accounts because specific goals are shown to be more motivating than “do your best” goals and time based goals create a sense of urgency that easily lend themselves to monitoring with mini-goals or

Their also needs to be some element of feedback in an optimal goal setting scenario. You need something to track your progress over time, which is why breaking your goals down into smaller, task-oriented achievements, will sustain your motivation over the course of the entire process. You also need to set “approach goals” which focus on achieving desired outcomes, instead of a negative focus on avoiding undesirable…

I do not take pleasure in writing negative evaluations but I cannot say that my experience with Dr. Arieahn Matamonasa-Bennett was positive in the least. I have enjoyed and learned very much from taking many professors at Fielding, and that’s why I feel that it is necessary to point out the professors who do not hold themselves to the same standards of excellence. I will try to articulate my experience in Dr. Arieahn Matamonasa-Bennett’s multicultural (712) course as briefly as possible. Also, if any verification of my accounts of what transpired is needed, I would be happy to provide the email correspondences or any additional information upon request. (1) To start, Dr. Matamonasa-Bennett’s syllabus for the 712 course was dated for the previous semester.…

Valeria Johnson coming to me today made me realized that although we work together and have a good working relationship she was willing after our session to tell me she would work with me in this health concern. Most people for the most part do not like being told what to do and it gets worse if it is about their bodies and how they should live. What does MI look like? It involves asking questions and responding to patients' comments in a way that validates their experiences, helps them develop reasons for making health behavior changes, and acknowledges patients' control of the decision to change. So a better way to get to help her was introduced motivational interviewing (MI) and by using this method I was providing advice and feedback.…

Kouzes and Posner offer a way to analyze your leadership to see if you are achieving any, or all, of these five practices of exemplary leadership. Class, Currently, setting goals that are realistic and measurable is something that I really struggle with. One goal that I had that I am just now seeing come to life is my goal to get back into being apart of the worship team at my church. When I first made this goal I loosely told people, and I never really had a lot of motivation to do it quickly. Since I didn't have a specific plan on how I was going to achieve this goal it took me over 3 months to get started and be able to be apart of the team. If i would have had more of a sence of urgency to achieve this goal it would have taken me less then a month.…

An exercise in class allowed me to understand my own reasoning for helping others as well as what may be my own selfish reasons for seeking this profession. For example, at one point in the exercise, I broke ground into my own self-assessment and found insight that I was partially seeking the profession for money and for my savior complex. I felt that this observation of myself showed that I was overall, functioning normally with both healthy and minimal unhealthy motivations. Another concern that came across my mind is when I have a…

For three weeks, my self-change goal was to run everyday for 30 minutes. The reason I chose this goal was to form a habit of consistent exercise in my life. The main barriers to the successful application of the goal were college classes I attended at night. However, after rearranging my running schedule, the barriers were overcome. During the total course of the project, the first week presented the most difficulty because of my amateur ability to sustain running for long periods of time.…

Watching the videos on the learning to learn taught me a lot not only about what I was doing wrong but also how these things in the videos would be able to help me in my future classroom. Along with making myself more successful with some of the ideas and skills that were presented in the videos I learned that there are many things that I can teach my students, that I was never taught, that will help make them successful in their school and personal careers. One of the biggest aspects from the video that I found that would make a difference in teaching my future students would be how your mindset affects how you learn and how you teach. In order to be a successful teacher you should have a positive mindset that encourages other people. I always grew up with teachers who had positive mindsets/attitudes that made school an amazing experience for me and made me want to become a teacher so I could positively affect students like my teachers did me.…
