The Relationship Between Followership And Leadership

While the amount of literature on followership compared to leadership is significantly less, there are still a variety of sources and authors researching the topic. Many articles start out by stating their observation that little attention is given to the area of followership and possible reasons, then go into why it is important, and finally discuss various types of followers, their qualities, and the constructs of followership. This review will take a similar approach. A common statement in literature on followership is how meager the articles discussing it compared to those on leaders or leadership. Over 75 years ago, well-known management theorist Mary Parker Follett noted that the part of follower was not considered enough but were an …show more content…
They are often overlooked but can play a significant role in a group’s success or failure. In fact, people are followers more than they are leaders; followership dominates our lives while leadership dominates our thinking (Kelly, 1988). In order to lead one must first show competence as a follower and be able to work well in groups (McCallum, 2013). Another area supporting the importance of followership deals with the relationships between followers and leaders. These roles can also be swapped depending on the situation, so both roles benefit from understanding the other. The foundation of interactions between leaders and followers affect the outcome of the leadership process (Tee et al., 2013). The confusion and misunderstand of what followership is may be due to the lack of attention to these three elements. In order for the research to continue a more in depth study of these pieces are necessary. Characteristics include motivators and intellectual abilities while behaviors may be obeying, resisting, or advising. Followers respond differently and exhibit various behaviors to similar leaders and are drawn to those with like values (Bjugstad et al., 2006). The outcomes include the reactions from leaders, whether a follower advances in a group, and if they are trusted (Uhl-Bien, 2014). An organization is at its best when both leadership and followership are clearly understood as complements of each

In chapter 1, "On Leadershp", Mr. Gardener outlines a foundation of leadership by indicating, followership is achieved when the flow of influence and communication goes in both directions. He also states that positional authority dose automatically mean that subordinates will be followers. It's up to the leader to earn the status of "performance elites" and the subordinates will determine if they will be followers, or continue as subordinates. Ultimately it will be the followers who will determine who the great leader are. I work at a Healthcare facility so I've chosen the mission statement of the facility that I've applied at.…

Many people debate the logic of being a leader verses a follower, and come to the consensus that neither is wrong, and in fact we need both leaders and followers to have a successful society. What makes the difference, however, is whether the one following is lead like a cattle being led to the butcher, or whether he is an advocate for himself and those around him. When the follower blindly follows orders and is nothing more than a 'cow standing in the rain' then he is not only useless, but causes more problems than whatever good he may have caused by doing his job whilst knowing what consequences his actions have, instead of merely doing his job to get it done. The leader needs to know that his men need a reason, a drive, a passion, and not…

I would hope that in my six years prior to being promoted to an assistant principal, I would have laid the foundation for positive relationships with the students, or at least some pocket of students. Additionally, I would think about the mindset of not necessarily the students, but the current faculty and staff and begin to measure the outlook that is currently in place. From here I would want to make changes that lead the community to a more positive mindset and outlook. Green (2013) states, “Effective leaders emphasized the development of interpersonal relationships while focusing on the personal needs of followers and the development of the kinds of relationships that would motivate followers to set and achieve high performance goals”.…

In chapter thirteen, Schermerhorn, Osborn, Uhl-Bein, and Hunt define followership as the behaviors of individuals acting in relation to leaders (p. 307). In another words, followership is the individuals’ ability to follow the directions, produce the intended or expected result, and to support the leader’s objectives. Some people are leaders by default, in that their formal job roles and responsibilities entail leadership functions – this is described as assigned leadership. Others in the team may take on an “informal” leadership role on account of their personality, knowledge and skills, and/or because others perceive them as the most influential. Such leadership is called emergent leadership and arises from the way other group members respond to individuals . Both types of leadership illustrate that anyone can have a leadership role. In viewing leadership as a process leadership is open to everyone and can be learned and developed (Jago, 1982).…

The most effective moral demands of followership for me is the servant (exemplary) followership. According to Johnson (2012), “most people spend most of their time in follower roles and that followers contributes the most to organizational success” (Johnson, 2012. p.278). I also agree the point that Robert Kelly believes that servant followership is more important than servant leadership. In fact, it an organization has certain followers who are the servant followers, it would influence the entire atmosphere in the organization. Other followers will follower them as a role model, and further willing to follow the leader.…

If the follower is persistent in their tasks that are at hand they will be a great asset to the team as a whole. One example of this is when a leader asks their team to come up with ideas and the team members spend their time working on ideas to present to the leader and when they show them to their leader they are simply rejected. The team followers must be persistent in working toward the goal of the leader and changing their goal to align with that of the leader rather than just giving up when faced with a difficult…

When you understand how to be a great follower, in your career, you have the ability to learn from the leader such as how they lead, take action, make decisions, and handle situations, etc. Through school and my previous jobs, the act of following offers great benefits because I have been able to learn from my leaders mistakes and successes. Furthermore, being a follower means that I’ve had a chance to focus on the job and my skill set rather than having to lead and demonstrate. A great example of how followership is an important leadership skill is from the movie Saving Private Ryan. Captain Miller (played by Tom Hanks) accepts the assignment to find Ryan.…

Leadership has always been the main focus of management research. There has been various studies that suggest or teach leaders how to become effective leaders among their followers. Until recently little attention has been paid to followership in leadership research (Baker, 2007; Bligh, 2011; Carsten, Uhl-Bien, West, Patera, & McGregor, 2010; Kelley, 2008; Sy, 2010 as cited in Uhl-Bien, Riggio, Lowe, & Carsten, 2013). It takes two to tango in this kind of relationship, without followers, there will be no leaders, and vice versa. In this particular study, followers will be given focus in order to determine what ways of employee cynicism can affect leader identity.…

There are four types of followers as based on a ranking of activity, and of level of critical thinking. A follower who is active and an independent critical thinker is an effective follower who is active but not a critical thinker is a conformist follower. A passive follower who is a critical thinker is an alienated follower, and a passive, not critically thinking follower is simply a passive follower. Any where towards the middle of this model is known as a pragmatic follower (Lussier & Achua, 2007). Of these types, I find myself to be an effective follower because I am both a critical thinker, and very active.…
