In the article is breaks down the characteristics of leaders that physician executives should possess.
There are certain qualities that a leader must possess in order to be effective. You must be a project a vision and be able to build a team and lead that team. A leader must be able to think strategically and understand the systems that they are working with. A leader must also be able to read the market forces. Whether you are a medical professional or a bank manager, these characteristics are important if you want your leadership to be effective.

In the article there is a saying that rings true today, “If you don’t have followers, you aren’t a leader – no matter what is says on your business card.” (Mary Frances Lyons, 2002) Therefore, leaders should ask themselves several questions, one being who are your employees? Your employees know whom they support. Are you internally driven? In other words, do you need praise and other reinforcements from others to validate you or are you able to provide your own motivations. Do you know when or when not to make a decision? In some cases, the best this to do is nothing and maintain your own. Are you honest with yourself? You must be able to examine yourself regularly and be transparent. Do you have a good sense of humor? You need to be able to laugh at yourself. Lastly, are you tolerant of diversity? You have to be open to different ideas, styles, approaches, and
