1. Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes or contributed to group efforts over time. 342
Some people believe that leadership is all about telling others what to do, but for me, it is primarily about being hyper-observant, and then stepping up to meet any need arises. This style has helped me while serving as the Vice-President of the Red Cross club at my school. I spend regularly six hours each week leading club meetings, organizing with our local Red Cross chapter, and reaching out to other local community organizations. I run the marketing and finance portion of the club, and oversee events that we sponsor such as our two annual blood drives …show more content…
I also find it gratifying to work with the rest of the leadership team because I am happy to listen to what they say and develop solutions that are agreeable to our entire team. Additionally, I make the time to get to know our members, even though our group has grown so large, over this past year.
I pride myself on being an organized and prepared leader. I enjoy working on our training PowerPoints ahead of our meetings, and practicing them beforehand so that I can confidently deliver them and answer any questions that arise. My active leadership at the blood drives also focuses on the idea of meeting our club’s needs. I facilitate all of the requests of the Red Cross employees during the drive. While I oversee the donor check-in process, being aware and proactive is especially important.
My leadership philosophy, that a leader first observes and then supports, comes into play through my relationships with the other leaders and all of our members. I work constantly to try to anticipate our club’s needs and in this way, be there and ready to help always.

What have you done to make your school or your community a better place? 370
“With the world so set on tearing itself apart, it don 't seem like such a bad thing to me to want to put a little bit of it back together.” This quote from the recent film Hacksaw Ridge embodies my sentiment that brightening up someone’s day is the best feeling in the world for me. This desire to help others prompted me to volunteer for two years at UCLA hospital to help transport patients. Hospital patients often deal with severe pain and sometimes loneliness, and I knew that giving some of my time could improve their moods and outlooks. One particular patient stands out in my mind.
A young girl who was missing both legs needed to be transported to her car. We laughed and joked together during our ten minute wheelchair journey to the parking lot. Along the way, she dropped her stuffed bear, and I retrieved it for her. A smile broke out on her face and although the act was small and reflexive for me, and we only spent a short time together, her wide grin made me feel that being with her even as she left to go home helped make the hospital and the world a more positive place. I maintained this attitude throughout my time at UCLA. The patients often commented about how much of a difference that I made in their day, but their smiles were all of the appreciation I
