Looking back at some of my experiences with leaders and mentors, I would notice that some would seem successful and be ineffective due to their credibility. Chapter one talks about modeling the way and leading by example. When I am ever being coached or mentored, I have to assume that whatever they are teaching me is creditable information. The Leadership Challenge discusses “strengthen (ing) resilience” (pp 206). I am the kind of person who wants all of my ducks in a row so when one or two are out of line, I get flustered not to mention overwhelmed to the point wanting to quit. The past few years have been one of loss in various ways; my father’s passing, my beloved pet for nine years passing, my husband’s illness, the loss of our house as well as the loss of my husband’s and partner’s business. Even though we are still reeling with the impact of what we have been hit with, we continue to encourage one another emotionally to look ahead, not dwell on the past.…

Ever since I was in the seventh grade, I have wanted to lose weight pretty badly. When in eighth grade I did not take a lot of action to achieve this. I was encouraged by family and friends to join the swim team. At first I was hesitant because I had not played a sport in eight years. I did not believe I was athletically capable of keeping up with the Canton Swim and Dive team.…

Everyone in at some point in their life will experience an event that will change their life forever; ranging from either a physical or mental change, to one that challenges someone’s beliefs and viewpoints on the world. For me, I experienced all three of these changes during my time on the First Flight High School Swim Team. By being a part of the team, I was able to break away from a former negative aspect on life and realize the potential and knowledge one can gather from those around them. In order to discuss the changes I experienced with the team, we must first break down how and where it all began. After moving around for the majority of the early years of my life, my family would settle down in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina shortly after my father’s retirement from the U.S Coast Guard.…

Everyone can say that they always imagined or wanted to look up to someone whether if the person was famous or related to them. Throughout my teenage day I’ve always wanted someone to mentor me and show me things in life that I can one day use in the future years to come. I didn’t want a mentor that was a few years older I always wanted someone that was almost twice my age, maybe even older than me. My mentor that I will be talking about name is James. James and I met at my job throughout my time working there I have worked with many managers.…

At times I think it’s often quite normal for new teachers to become overwhelmed their first year teaching. Especially at a school where there may not be enough resources to adequately assist them, this leaves many new teachers to fend for themselves. In my experience, it was my mentors that made a difference in my career, and prompted me to pay it forward and it is these mentors that I try to emulate in my own mentoring. A mentor serves as a professional role model for the mentee.…

When I was in the first grade, I was considered a goody two-shoes because I followed all the rules and got good grades, but I never really believed that I deserved the nickname until one day on the playground. There are multiple ways I am a leader within my community. The main way I lead my peers is through sports. I have been on my different teams; volleyball, basketball, track, and softball have all given me the opportunity to build my character and to lead by example. I was the volleyball team captain for my junior and senior year, so many of the younger girls were looking up to me. The best way to lead is by your actions; I would always go hard in practices and games to show the underclassmen that in order to get the best results, you need to give it your all.…

I’ve played volleyball since I was 10 years old. I loved playing that sport so much that volleyball eventually became my identity to my peers since I was very well known for being on a club team and Varsity team at St. Patrick-St. Vincent High School. Personally, it was a bittersweet feeling when I realized that my senior year would be the last time I was on a high school sports team. However, after volleyball ended, my instincts suddenly told me to join the swim team, which I did and it was the best decision that I made.…
