Leader Self Assessment

After completing the Teacher Leader Self-Assessment (2009), I have determined that I fit into the “developing” or “proficient” category in each skill and knowledge area. The assessment was broken-down into five main categories of skills and knowledge needed to become a successful teacher leader: Working with Adult Leaders, Collaborative Work, Communication, Knowledge of Content and Pedagogy, and Systems Thinking. Within each category, there are many areas in which I feel very comfortable, and some I feel I can learn to improve my abilities.

I have built strong professional relationships with many of my colleagues, administrators, and students, and feel it has built trust and respect, which help achieve goals and solve disagreements in a healthy manner. I have always enjoyed a healthy debate, and instructional leaders need the skill of being able to ask the tough questions, but be prepared and comfortable with varying opinions on such subjects. I have a very open mind when it comes to others’ opinions because I realize everyone’s values and beliefs are individual and make them unique. There are times I enjoy being the “devil’s advocate” which gives an opposite stance to a topic so the parties involved are forced to think about why they truly believe in their position. This creates critical and diverse thoughts, which open new conversations and builds awareness of others’ ideologies. With the rise of technology in schools, communication on an organizational standpoint has become very convenient. Emails, Google Docs, and social media sites are all beneficial tools to communicate with colleagues. One area of improvement for myself would be to explore and utilize more innovative communication through …show more content…
As a music educator, I need to gain more experience in the standards and assessments of other content areas. I feel very comfortable with ideas for instructional strategies and classroom management, but will need to prepare for each colleague’s subject area to assist in assessment and content standard resources. Exploring professional literature resources and reviewing the Iowa Core can enhance this knowledge. A major strength in this category is my ability to adjust instruction during a class period. As a music instructor, my instruction is adjusted multiple times daily. If an ensemble is not grasping a certain skill, I may need to change the way I am teaching so all students can achieve the desired

    1. After reflecting on who or what event provided me with leadership influence I concluded there wasn’t one person or one event that has had the most effect on me to strive to become a better leader or person for that matter. Many of my past supervisors and present alike have been good and bad with more good than bad. I attempt to take pieces from each of their leadership qualities, use things I liked and stayed away from their “bad” leadership qualities I did not believe helped me grow as a leader or produce quality jobs or mission results. All the while, my own personality and beliefs intertwined with their leadership styles to make me who I am today as a leader.…

I am an RA at Northern Kentucky University. As an RA, I help students transition to college and help them understand how to live on their own away from parents. It is my duty to enforce University Housing policy- to ensure the safety of students plus maintain a positive learning environment. As an RA, I have developed a unique set of skills because I get to work with students to ensure they are receiving a full well rounded college experience while enforcing rules that some tend to break. This can be challenging because I still have to live with them unlike police; for example, they get to go home after they interact with someone so they don’t have to deal with it when their job is over.…

Per my initial GAP Analysis, the proficient results for personal leadership assessment, goal-setting, and implementation proficiency were shockingly lower than what I expected. On the other hand, my proficiency results for self-awareness, others awareness, self-management, and management of others were outstanding. The proficiency results for each project were mediocre because first, I had no previous experience completing a situation audit. Second, I have never researched and analyzed a specific organization’s culture, climate, and ethical decision-making processes.…

Each year since becoming a principal, I work with my school council to develop leadership qualities for our school. The council works together to determine how and if these qualities need to be revised and updated based on the current needs of the school, studnets, and staff. Altough these identified qualities should exemplify what the leader of the school should possess, they are used to find a replacement principal. This year, I have changed school and have most recently gone through this process.…

I find that, for me, the personality element within the Right to Lead Model is the most important concept within Module 5, Adaptable Leader. Personality seems to be the most important concept within said model, and the lesson in general, because personality shapes how everything we communicate is perceived by others. This means that every other one of your leadership qualities rely on you having a positive personality in order for you to be effective. Without a well-received personality, even if you are highly skilled in your field and act as a model leader, you will be perceived poorly and everything you do will be tainted. This would cause subordinates, coworkers, and supervisors to avoid dealing with you.…

Leaders create new paths for others to follow through taking initiatives. During my grade 10 English Class, I created an infographic about women in India and the paved path of discrimination they are forced to walk upon. From being born into a world of stereotypes to facing oppression after marriage, women in most developing countries endure hardships. As a female of a visual minority, the horror of experiencing life in this environment angered me as this is not only morally incorrect, but physically incomprehensible. At this moment, I decided to take my first steps in tackling the issue of inequality through educating my community.…

Jack Walsh once said “before you are a leader success is about growing yourself. When you become a leader success is about growing others”. As a young child my mother was a vocational agriculture teacher, as her job progressed she grew many of today’s leaders and she also took pride in her young saplings and grew them into the outstanding people of today. When it was my turn to be in ag classes I took this opportunity and joined her leadership and career development teams that she trained, I thought having a mom as a coach would be easy but I learned quickly that with that blessing came priorities not only did I have to research topics for our agriculture issues team, I also wrote my fair share of scripts for the contest. My years of high school English I was equipped with the tools of how to correctly research debatable topics and also how to correctly write scripts and my speaking abilities.…
