Personal Narrative: Coach Centric Leadership

Improved Essays
Since attending UNLV I have heard a lot of professionals, alumnus, and professors “keys to success” but one that seems to come up time and time again is just how important it is to be a leader. There are several kinds of leadership including servant, autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire. Brett Shannon talked to us about what it means to be a coach centric leader. A coach centric leader is someone in whom leadership seems effortless, a positive attitude is contagious, and sees that every interaction is a possibility for teaching. Mr. Shannon shared with us the twelve talents required to be a successful and confident coach centric leader. The first talent required to be a successful coach centric leader is an acute awareness of self, knowing how to stay true to yourself and what your morals and values will set you up with a …show more content…
I believe you can apply this to the 4th UULO which is global/multicultural knowledge. It is important to learn about other cultures and your place and effect in them. When I traveled to France two summers ago I went through a kind of culture shock where I realized that everything I did in the USA affected others, not only in other towns but on other continents. I realized that this world is not just us, and every action has a reaction on someone else. The ninth talent is to communicate dynamically. Which very obviously applies to UULO number three; developing a good sense of communication. The ability to communicate well is often a deciding factor in job interviews and internship interviews. Without communication, nothing can be successful. Think of a restaurant, if the patron doesn’t tell the server, and the server doesn’t tell the cook, and the cook doesn’t record it for the bookkeeper, the business will quickly fail. Being able to communicate successfully in different ways with different people means success not only in the business world but in your personal

As an adult I still play competitively and for the last 15 years have coached at the University and High School levels and I have found that truly investing in the success of others is a daily necessity. Teamwork is vital and having a collective objective is the basis for being a Transformational Leader; motivating subordinates using the common goal through, encouragement, support and respect to achieve the desired result is the ultimate target. Coaching is in general top- down and whether it is in athletics or business a transformational leadership style can be a “salient feature to attract and retain members who have similar characteristics in teams (Ehrhart & Klein, 2001; George, 1990; Schneider, 1987).…

The Leadership Challenge discusses “strengthen (ing) resilience” (pp 206). I am the kind of person who wants all of my ducks in a row so when one or two are out of line, I get flustered not to mention overwhelmed to the point wanting to quit. The past few years have been one of loss in various ways; my father’s passing, my beloved pet for nine years passing, my husband’s illness, the loss of our house as well as the loss of my husband’s and partner’s business. Even though we are still reeling with the impact of what we have been hit with, we continue to encourage one another emotionally to look ahead, not dwell on the past.…

Clarifying what the best leaders do, and then practicing it ourselves, can move us into their ranks (Whitaker, 2009). The goal of a great leader is to help teachers understand and improve their practices and to gauge the effectiveness of their instruction. Educational leadership is constructed with knowledge acquired from many sources, and self-evaluation and experience help solidify leadership.…

Coach Dale tells his team “If you put your effort into playing to your potential, to being the best you can be, I don’t care what the scoreboard says at the end of the game, in my book we’re going to be winners” (Hoosiers, 1986). This is a great example of effective leadership. Coach Dale has a vision and uses his strategic thinking to clarify to the team what is possible. One of the main setbacks a potential leader may face is clarifying what others can contribute, the third step in becoming an effective leader. Two factors are critical in…

The scope of power and prestige was present in my summer coaching job because both Tommy and I were equal status individuals working together to complete the task which was ultimently to have the team win more games. My first leadership experience came from being a voluntary work as a life- and management skills trainer, where I had to deal with different background, minds and studies trainees, to be the leader of my own session, the thing that let me build my communication, discussion and presentation skills. During this period I have met so many people with various way of thinking, where I succeed dealing with them each time. After that I started working as assistant supervisor in a psychological support centre for the international medical corps, where I had the chance to deal with very professional and creative people, the hardest thing was being accepted as the youngest member of the team and to be known as a leader , but being in this atmosphere…

Athletic directors have the ability to shape, mold, and pour into many lives due to their impact on others. The leadership style(s) of an athletic director must be able to help cultivate an environment that adheres to the school’s mission statement as well as the mission statement of the athletic program(s). As Allen, Grigsby, & Peters (2015) state, “school leader is considered one of the most influential factors in the development of the quality and character of a school”. Much of the research today places an emphasis on the leadership style of the administrator of the school and how the school will, eventually, mirror that particular leadership style. The “leadership style (of the athletic director) and skills impact a variety of teachers…

My personal definition of leadership is the ability of one person to get another person or a group of people to come together to accomplish a common goal. The leader of the group is the one who sets out the agenda or goal. Your personal leadership style is something that is never finalized; however, it is a constant work in progress. Your life experiences and every single interaction you have throughout your life help mold and define your leadership style. According to Webster 's dictionary, the definition of leadership is, "a position as a leader of a group, organization, etc. : the time when a person holds the position of leader.…

My leadership philosophy is one that is rooted in the strong belief that it must be a continuous quest to motivate all students to become critical thinkers, effective communicators, and lifelong learners, while possessing outstanding character. This includes assisting students with discovering their talents and interests, therefore developing a love of learning, while developing into ethical, productive citizens. Accomplishing this requires a leader who is knowledgeable in pedagogy and curriculum, including the use of data and current assessments to enhance instruction, and who possesses outstanding communication skills, the ability to manage an operation’s resources effectively, promotes collaboration and teamwork, and is passionate and committed to helping students learn. I believe that my interpersonal skills will be my biggest strength as an educational leader. Through frequent, honest communication, and my enthusiasm for the subject, I will demonstrate understanding and compassion for those around me, therefore building trusting relationships.…

Introduction “Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.” — Vince Lombardi As I reflect on my leadership journey, I become more convinced with Vince that leaders are not born leaders, but are a result of a conscious effort to be one. While serving in various institutions in leadership positions, I have seen myself emerge to those positions through my hard work and skills rather than just having been assigned to it. Various factors like experience, training, mentorship, conscious practice and even failure have contributed in developing my leadership abilities.…
