This was caused from lead based paint, and it led to the banning of lead-based paint in many nations, although not in the US. (Landrigan, Philip). While we don’t know what the reasoning of the epidemic was, we can assume it was in younger children that explore their world with their hands and mouth. As a parent, we watch our children put this toy in their mouth, or pick something off the floor and put it in their mouth. We try and correct it but sometimes we don’t notice little Jane just picked up a paint chip off the floor from the family’s home that dates back to early 1800s, when lead paint was used. Which then opens up little Jane, to have lead poisoning. Even today in the pediatric world, lead testing has become common in children, years after lead paint was banned from the United States, as some countries that we import from may still use lead based paint or because a child is exposure from their home, or a toy that dated back before the ban on lead
