Everybody makes leadership mistakes, it's ok to have them but it is vital to learn from them. I have made many leadership errors in my life but I have learned from them to better myself as a leader in the future. A couple times this has happened is when I was drilling a flight, teaching a group of cadets, and being too friendly.
One of the times I have made a leadership mistake is when I was d1·illing a group of cadets and I failed to call a command on the correct step. What I learned from this is that I need to be more prepared before I go in front of a group of people that I need to lead. You could either sit there and just acknowledge your mistake, which isn't enough, or you

The Senior Leader Course (SLC) reinforced in me the true meaning General Al Gray’s Grayism, “Don’t be afraid to learn from others” (Otte, 2015). The greatest learning opportunity in SLC came from my fellow classmates and their fearlessness in sharing their personal and professional experiences. If I could transport this class back in time one year and know what I know now, I would have been better able to assist one of my Soldiers whose service was reviewed under the Army’s Qualitative Management Program (QMP). Many of my classmates impressed me with their experience, both their technical skills while deployed and their compassion for Soldiers while fulfilling their duties as senior non-commissioned officers (NCO). I learned the most from…

Another time that I have taken a leadership role is when our sideline cheer team had a booth at the Water Festival. I took the morning shift and when I got there I had all of the materials but only me and my coach had shown up and she still had to head back to the school to get the things we were selling. So while she went and got the stuff I stayed at the booth and lead it by myself until my teammates came and helped. I decided to be a leader in this situation because I knew that it was what I had to do to help my coach out so that she could get her stuff done. I believe that by leading the booth for a few hours I helped my coach accomplish what she had to do for the day and helped my team by sitting at the booth fundraising to help pay for some of our debts.…

Seek responsibility and take responsibility for your actions, what that means is that when you do something, make a decision, whatever it may be, take responsibility for them. Being a leader of any kind, at any level means someone either looks up to you, or they simply look to you for guidance. When you have people under you, or that you are in charge of, you have to be on top of things, know how to handle any situation, and if you do not know how to handle a situation, then know where you can find information on how to handle the situation. Marines past, present, and future all have had to and will have to take responsibilities for their actions. In some way, shape, or form we cannot just try and weasel our way out of a situation.…

The Accidental Leader: What to Do When You’re Suddenly in Charge Being a leader can happen to any one of us at any time. When we are given the role of being a leader it often paints a different image of what we look like to others based on the fact that we are in charge. We never know when a situation will arise that will call us to step up to the challenge of leading a group of a few people or a whole division of a company. The word leader can often make seem overwhelming to a lot of people but after reading Harvey Robbins’s and Michael Finley’s The Accidental Leader you no longer have to question what to do when you’re suddenly in charge. Leadership is a class I’ve always been interested in being a part of. Growing up, I was always taught to be a leader. My parents have always told me “You don’t choose to be a leader, you slowly evolve into a leader.” It’s always stuck with me and I’ve learned that I must set goals and go through struggles in life in order to learn from them. Those small things have allowed me to transform into the person that I am today.…
