Before 1922, Waikiki was described as duck ponds, rice paddies, and swampland. Lucius E. Pinkam was a president of the Territorial Board of Health and he wanted to build Waikiki to be a beautiful and unique district. After the first project name Ala Wai canal, the appearance of Waikiki was totally changed. The people from another place were moving to Waikiki and the number of residents living in Waikiki increase rapidly. After that, a lot of luxury hotel brand came to Waikiki such as Royal Hawaiian. Waikiki had some problem with uncontrolled growth and too much density. The infrastructure can’t afford the population and the visitor. In 1976, the City council came up with Waikiki Special Design District to solve the problem. In order to stop …show more content…
Based on the Hawaii’s experience, we can conduct into 8 lessons that we can use for another destination. The first lesson is that tight and pervasive government control is not always necessary to produce a dream destination. In Hawaii’s experience, we can see that the State government helped to promote Waikiki by contributing money for infrastructures, but it is not the main reason that help Waikiki. We only regulated the industry when it felt regulation is necessary to protect the interests of tourist and residents. Other than that, the regulation won’t work. The second lesson that the government can both help or destroy the tourism. The third lesson that we have to make sure that taxing tourism won’t harm tourism. The taxing on tourism will increase the price for tourist and they might don’t come back. However, in some destination tourism such as Hawaii, taxing is important because the industry wants more money for promoting. The fourth lesson that admission fees are an excellent source of revenue to pay for the upkeep of popular natural attractions. The admission fee is really helpful in some way. That is how we generate revenue to maintain the facility or the building. We also can use the revenue from admission fee for public service. The fifth lesson that responsibility to raise revenues should go hand in hand with the responsibility to spend. I think this lesson is really important. In Hawaii’s situation, they can generate a lot of money from tax, but the amount of funding the State Council might get back is not much. It is based on the priority of the State. Therefore, some government should change the law or regulation to improve the tourism industry. The sixth lesson that incentives may not be necessary to induce tourism investment. The seventh lesson that money spent on collecting basic tourism data is well spent. The eighth lesson that in developing

Hawaii, the home of white sand beaches, pro surfing, hula dances, and warm weather. If I could move to any region within the United States, I would move to Hawaii with no hesitation. Hawaii contains a prestigious hospital and the opportunity to become a surfer. Both of which of which I have always dreamed of being a part in. Nothing would make me happier than becoming an orthopedic surgeon operating out of a Hawaiian hospital working on shark attack victims and other unlucky victims who need orthopedic repair, then go straight to the beach to surf and relax for the remainder of the day.…

Whenever I go to Mimi (grandma) and Yaya’s (grandpa) house Mimi would show me pictures about the way she lived and Yaya loves telling me stories about how their people lived in Hawaii. Did you know the volcano was made in 1762 and didn’t erupt until 1874. Mimi told me that my father was born in Hawaii but he only lived there for 6 years.…

In the islands of Hawaii, Hawaiians depended on the land, scavenging for resources to gather in order to survive. Hawaiians became accustomed to the landscape and began to learn how to farm to grow local plants, how to hunt, and fish from the local wildlife. Even though there's the ocean to swim in, and the mountains to hike and relax, people still avoid this. Caught up in the fast pace lifestyle of businesses, they forget what's really out there.…
