Lay's Kettle Cookeed Jalapeno Advertisement

The ad I selected is a Lay’s Kettle Cooked Jalapeno chip advertisement printed in People Magazine. The ad depicts a garage band with three members while the bottom shows the actual chip product. The overall message of the ad (explained further below) works with the design principles to create a bold unique message for the customer.

For starters, I believe this ad is targeted towards the average young/middle-aged person. The message of the ad is to avoid a “plain” life and add some excitement like the jalapeño flavor creates. This idea can be supported by the younger/middle-aged men in the picture. They are playing in a small garage band, nothing super fancy. The garage itself is filled with paint cans and old records showing that these are just average people, not super high class by any means. In addition, since this ad was found in People it further supports the claim that this ad is focusing on middle class people as they are the main basis of the magazine’s clients. People who also read this magazine want to try and be a little unique and bold like the celebrities they are reading about.

“Life gets plain if you don’t add flavor. Life’s Tasty. Crunch on,” lets the reader think that this is a unique product that will help add a little flair to their life. The goal of this ad was to make the reader think if their life choices are plain or not. The reader can reflect on incorporating more “flavor” in their life and in their shopping choices. The vibe of the band mixed with the ad’s message really helps bring visibility to the company’s

Even though some are not too healthy, condiments have helped shape people’s dietary habits for centuries. People use condiments on a variety of different items ranging from hot dogs to french fries, and everything in between. In some cases people will not eat a specific food without their desired condiment. Because of this crave, many companies, including Heinz and French’s, create advertisements for these products. With the amount of information, consumers are bombarded with each day, it’s getting harder and harder for companies to make their commercials and advertisements stand out from the rest, and in return convince their target audience to buy their product. A Marker’s main task is to make an emotional connection with their target audience; “people will pay more attention to a humorous commercial than a factual, opening themselves up to be influenced.” (Levitt, 2017). Plain coffee is fast becoming a thing of the past, and that’s what McDonald's spoofs in their new McCafe commercial that aired in the UK earlier this year. The “McDonalds: Shops” ad targets on-the-go coffee consumers through humorous narrative, upbeat music, and simple language to make an emotional and logical appeal.…

Most of these things are misidentified or have undue value placed on them. Nine months ago the Mr. Clean | Cleaner of Your Dreams commercial aired and it was a sensation. It has a strong appeal to pathos and logos but not a strong support on the ethos end. The timing, or kairos, for the commercial also played a big role in how well it did. The commercial stars Mr. Clean and another woman who he begins to clean with around the house. As simple as that may sound there are many intricacies that make this commercial an effective advertisement for it’s product.…
