The painting, Layman Vimalakirti also by Toyo resembles, the Painting of Juro in its similar depiction of a white-haired man, leaning with his shoulders and head, forward in a sign of humility. The scarf and draperies around this figure are also similar. However, in this painting Toyo did not depict any animals that represent longevity. Instead he only focused on the God himself. Jurojin became a popular subject of Japanese ink wash paintings. He was first introduced into the Japanese art tradition by famous Zen Buddhist painters. Many depictions of Jurojin appeared during the span of the Muromachi period through the Edo period (1603-1869). Due to having more than one painting depicting the God Juro, it is evident that Sesshu Toyo was

Compare and Contrast Essay The two works of art that I have chosen to compare and contrast had me worried at first. I wondered if there were enough things to compare between the two. However, after evaluating Tsukioka Yoshitoshi’s Samurai Attacks Woman and Giuseppe Arcimboldo’s self portrait, I have come to find that they share many things in common; from medium to colour, I will discuss the vast array of contrasts as well as similarities. It helps first to describe the two pieces. The first one that caught my eye while perusing through the database was Tsukioka’s, which was created during the Meiji period of Japan.…

His ability to write not only from the perspective of his own experiences, but to embody the viewpoint of others, gives a voice to those who saw a story in a different light. Komunyakaa himself served as a journalist in the Vietnam War and several years later, he began to write poetry remembering his experiences (Salas 34). His most famous anthology, Neon Vernacular, which earned him the Pulitzer Prize in 1994, contains a wide variety of poems about growing up as an African American in the Deep South, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Vietnam War. According to Tiffany Vann Sprecher, James of Vitry (c. 1160-1240) student of Peter de Chanter, was an Augustinian canon whose written legacy includes a Vita of the famous beguine Mary of Oignies and nearly 450 model sermons for preachers to deliver as written or to use as inspiration in writing their own sermons. “The remission of sins and the reward of eternal life” was one of the sermons pictured of Urban preaching by James of Vitry appeals to the nobles’ hope for remission of sins and entrance into the heaven. According to this sermon, people I meant Crusaders who prepared themselves for the services of God, those who confessed and expressed remorse or penitence, are considered true martyrs while they are in the service of Christ. Those people are freed from venal and also mortal sins, all the penitence they took pleasure in, consumed from the punishment for their sins in this world and the punishment of purgatory in the next world, safe from the tortures of hell, in the glory and honor of being crowned in eternal benediction.…

As seen commonly in many famous Japanese artworks, a Shoki is a cultural warrior usually associated with the supernatural. In this woodcut print entitled “Shoki Creeping Up on a Sleeping Demon” by Yoshitoshi Ryakuga a monstrous fish demon appears to be literally sucking the life out a Shoki warrior. Created in 1882 this painting portrays another example of how common ghostly monsters were and still are are in Japanese culture. The supernatural play an important part in japanese art for they were thought to be spirits trapped on earth so they can avenge the tragic circumstances of their deaths. The artist used a woodcut print to portray the tragic outcome of what happened to the japanese warrior when he attempted to bravely slay the fearful…

Viviana's Response "In fact, 19 year olds spent as much time being inactive and sedentary as 60 year olds" according to Alice Park. Over the years, it has been clearly seen that the active rate of most people has drastically decreased, especially in teens. As the rate rises, teens no longer find a need for being physically active or exercising, and miss out on all of the benefits like strong muscle gain, improvements to their outer features such as skin, and even mental health. Exercising can lead to many good tings and can be very helpful for young teens only because the effects are long lasting. First, your muscles are a very important part of your body.…

The article “Why All Humans Need to Eat Meat for Health,” written by bodybuilding enthusiast Kadya Araki, talks about the benefits of eating meat and how it contributes to human body growth. She argues that meat is necessary for physical and mental health, and thus shouldn’t be cut out of a person’s diet. Araki believes that humans need to eat meat to be healthy, and claims that a meatless diet can’t provide the necessary nutrients for muscle growth and good health; however, her argument used insufficient evidence for proving that we can’t live on a vegan diet, did not account for other factors that may have had an influence on people’s health, and dismissed one of the main reasons why people choose to be vegan. Before delving deep into the…

Rembrandt van Rijin’s Portrait of a Man With Arms Akimbo reflects his personal technique as well as the Dutch Baroque style, which lasted throughout the 17th Century. This piece features an unidentified man depicted in a position of strength and superiority. This is established through Rembrandt’s use of composition and light, using effects common to the Baroque era such as tenebrism. To better understand the identity of the man pictured, physical qualities such as style of dress can be used to suggest his occupation and time period. Rembrandt was known for creating strikingly realistic portraits, often portraying his subjects with a psychological presence.…

Jiri G. Ruzicka’s “American Superheroes and the Politics of Good and Evil,” poses the statement, “The United States of America is the promised land for comics” (Ruzicka 46). Comic books have been around for a very long time — almost dating back to the late 1800’s. Many see these books as merely a form of entertainment; however, they are more significant than that. Comics and graphic novels reflect the American societal values of the time through their main characters, the character’s struggles and the character’s adversaries. The fact that comics and graphic novels contain the social ideology of the time and are entertaining, makes them a good learning aid for social studies.…
