Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s Influence on Literature
A poet, playwright, leader, publisher, activist, father and entrepreneur, Lawrence Ferlinghetti helped generate the literary movement: “Beat” in the 1950s. Like many others, he believed that literature should be available to all everyone. Despite, their education, wealth or heritage. He composed poetry to discuss taboos, political movement and to ponder “American idiom and modern jazz.” (Lawrence Ferlinghetti). Lawrence Ferlinghetti was a vital artist during the 1950s; he led an authoritative example for others, resulting in many artists after him having to courage to speak up about the controversial problems in the society.

In the first stanza, he states: “The world is a beautiful place to be born into if you don’t mind happiness…if you don’t mind a touch of hell now and then just when everything is fine because even in heaven they don’t sing all the time…” (LitChatte.Com.2018). This stanza “makes strong use of irony, purporting to state that the world is happy, but only if you live in heaven and don’t mind a little hell now and then.” (Lawrence Ferlinghetti). I believe that Lawrence Ferlinghetti focuses on the reality of life; he discusses the undeniable truth and writes this poem in a clever manner, alluding to all people of society. For example, he writes this for those that are happy in this delusional world and on the contrary, to those that stand in a dark place consumed with disadvantages.
