Law School And Humor Essay

The current study examines what, if any, effects law school has on individuals’ sense of humor, both in the short-term and in the long-term. I start by reviewing what past research has reveled in regards to the relationship between law school and overall well-being. I then briefly touch upon the work that has been done on the relationship between well-being and humor. I posit that this study will coincide with the previous research that has been done on law school and well-being, and will expand upon the relationship between law school and humor. If the hypotheses lend true, this study will show the negative effect that law school has on sense of humor and how this persists into the future.

Research conducted by Kennon M. Sheldon and Lawrence S. Krieger (2004) examined the effects that law school has on subjective well-being (SWB), motivation, and values over the course of one’s law school career. Participants in this study were evaluated during 4 different time frames: In August 2000 during a group orientation meeting on their first day of law school, in March 2001, in early November 2001, and then lastly in early November 2002 (Sheldon & Krieger, 2004). The results of the study found when compared to an undergraduate sample, those entering law school actually had higher positive affect, higher life satisfaction, and higher overall SWB (Sheldon & Krieger, 2004). These results were consistent with earlier research, and were used to show that students are not entering law school with pre-existing distress, nor do law students necessarily exhibit any detrimental personality traits (Sheldon & Krieger, 2004). However, after looking at the responses from March 2001, only seven months later, the results showed that overall individuals experienced large reductions in positive affect, life satisfaction, and overall SWB (Sheldon & Krieger, 2004). The results also showed increases in negative affect, depression, and physical symptoms (Sheldon & Kreiger, 2004). Even more striking, is that the results from the November 2001 and 2002 evaluations showed that the overall levels of SWB

North Shore Community College celebrated “Law Day” this year by having noted criminal defense attorney J.W. Carney as a guest speaker. He began his speech by addressing how his own Paralegal makes his job easier by keeping him organized, and having him stay on track by telling him what needs to be done. He gave the advice of “follow your dreams” to anyone starting out in the legal profession. Attorney Carney stated the reason he became a lawyer was inspiration from watching the show “The Defenders,” and from movies like, “Gideon’s Trumpet.” In the beginning of his career, he worked for five years at the public defender’s office, five years as a prosecutor and now is in private practice.…

When we got admitted to law school, we all most likely encountered a number of emotions. Some of you might had felt positive feelings, other of you may had experienced mixed thoughts instead. However, it seems, that the longer we went on in our law school journey; the friends we were able to create, the professors whom went the extra mile for us, and the clubs that this school currently offers have helped made this law school feel less intimidating and more like a home. The Christian Legal Society should be chartered back to at WMU-Cooley Law School because we want to enable our members, individually, and as a group, to love the Lord with their whole beings - hearts, souls, and minds - and to love their neighbors as themselves.…

Even through the good experiences and the bad or even embarrassing moments in the past she didn’t hesitate to tell us that her experience in law school was also enriched by friendships and bonds. In Law school you are with the same group of people for the next three years. The research findings additionally suggest that an individual’s view of happiness depended far more upon their sense of time, than their age. Additionally, they believe that attitudes toward happiness are highly malleable and easily influenced by shifting the timeframe people consider. To maximize these findings in regards to college students, it is important when college faculty provide an on-campus intervention, for students, to provide contextual cues that encourage students to savor the present moment. Further more, it is equally important for such interventions to prepare students to experience happiness. This intervention method provides further resilience to college students dropping out due to fear of future tuition debt or feeling overwhelmed in their current…

    Essay On Humorists

Humorists Everyone has a different sense of humor, whether it’s sarcastic or even stupid. Some, like Alain de Botton, the author of the 2004 novel Status Anxiety, believe that humorists play a vital role in society; however, that role cannot be considered vital in society today. While some believe that humorists are vital because they are able to make insulting (and sometimes inappropriate) insinuations about others, having the ability to get away with such an atrocity is not necessarily a good idea. For example, even though the show Seinfeld is used to poke fun at some of the things people say, do or act like, they may take offense to some of the content on the show; a Cigar Store Indian, a ‘Sidler’, even a holiday that one of the characters…

Screwball comedy attempts to invert these several characteristics of film noir in order to create a more light-hearted approach to filmmaking. Like film noir, screwball comedy is an American genre that became popular during the Great Depression. Its purpose was to instill a feeling of hope within the audience through its romantic storylines. As film noir did, screwball comedy provided an escape for Americans. Most students do it for upward mobility, but when they get hired into large law firms and are asked to help the less unfortunate, they feel uneasy about it. One male student said that the reason why he decided to stay away from law students who want to help the poor is because it reminded him of his own guilt. Higher stress levels were built from personal problems and resulted from the fear of academic insufficiency. When compared, about 62 percent of first-year working-class students felt deeply pressured to earn the best grades, while only 35 percent of upper-class students felt the same (Granfield). It comes from the notion that since the working-class students know that they do not have elite backgrounds, they must convert to being at top of their class to know that they are someone who is worth going to the prestigious law school.…

The idea that comedy, or even entertainment as a whole, should have limits have been around for a while now. Angry parents and social justice warriors have gone out of their way to stop, or limit, the comedians who use offensive humor. Some comedians see the uproar of the people to stop making offensive jokes while others see it as a challenge to upset the most people. Now, most comedians don’t want to lose their jobs so they still don’t push the limits too far; that is, unless that's how they keep their job. South Park , Daniel Tosh, or Sarah Silverman are comedians and TV shows that keep on pushing the limits to make comedy have no limits.…
