I am submitting this application for the Law Clerk (Converts to General Attorney) position with the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of the Principal Legal Advisor (OPLA). I am extremely interested in the Law Clerk position because I am passionate about serving vulnerable populations, such as immigrant communities. I have seen honest immigrants come to this country seeking refuge and peace, only to be victimized by criminal noncitizens. Because I sympathize with ICE’s mission to protect all American populations by enforcing immigration law, I truly believe that I can serve the OPLA well as a Law Clerk. Additionally, I provided support for the preparation and review of abuse and neglect cases. During this internship, I observed how the agency zealously worked to secure justice for at-risk individuals and families, and I took pride in serving a larger purpose. So much so that I took the initiative to update the agency’s Legal References Guide and created a digital copy for agencywide use. As a Law Clerk, I would also exercise the litigation, advocacy, and communication skills that I honed while interning with Neighborhood Defender Services. During this internship, I attended multiple Family Court hearings and provided support to a family law attorney by drafting various legal documents (e.g. motions, briefs, and affidavits) for timely submission to the court. I also managed my own case load and represented an immigrant parent preparing for a New York State Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR) hearing. I developed case strategies, composed a litigation plan, and prepared the client for direct and cross-examination. Ultimately, I successfully negotiated the settlement of the case with the opposing counsel prior to the
