Law & Order: SVU has been one of the most popular crime shows in existence for the past 18 years. The show is about an NYPD sub-unit called the Special Victim’s unit or SVU. Most Crime shows like NYPD Blue, Criminal Minds, and CSI Miami tend to be male dominated because law enforcement is a male dominated profession, but Law & Order SVU is a bit different. The cast gender count is more balanced because most of the victims tend to be female and sexual assaulters tend to be male. The show’s cast usually consists of 10 main characters that are close to half women hand half men. Most of the cops who do the dangerous work like chasing apprehending the suspects are men with the exception with the exception of maybe one female and most of …show more content…
Shows like Everybody love Raymond, Martin, Breaking Bad and the Cosby Show; in all these show the main Character has a supportive female companion. Even in the media gender role are presented. We have all noticed that in most news broadcastings the Head Anchor is 99.9 percent of the time a male while the co-anchor is a female. It kind of presents the traditional husband a wife relationship where the man is captain of the ship and the woman is the first mate. While traditional gender roles have their own set of rules, the opposing progressive society could be a woman leading or Men and Woman have equal roles. But on Law and Order, the roles of gender shift up and down contently. For example the past 18 years the roles of attorneys, detective, cop, and other important roles have shifted between back and forward between male and female but since the since the show released in 1999 The SVU chief (Don Cragen) has always been male and the highest ranked detective (Detective Benson) has always been female. But in the latest season, the Chief has retired and now the female, Detective Benson is the new chief of SVU. So by giving the highest position to a female they have to decide to ignore the traditional gender roles and being more …show more content…
In the episode, I watch the SVU was trying to prove that a teenage girl was raped by her own uncle. In this case all three detectives, Ammaro, Zarist and Rollins worked together in questioning the suspects and victims. They all had very neutral personalities and authority. I noticed in watching them during questioning no one talked more or was more intimidating than the other. Everything was very balanced between the three of them even though one of them was a female. On the other hand, there was Sargent Tutuola who has been in SVU almost as long Chief Benson, so he has a bit more authority than the detectives and when he interacts with them he sometimes calls the shots. Prosecutor Barba’s character is a little interesting in the topic because he has a very strong personality and likes to tell everyone what to do and when to do it. He even has the same attitude with Chief Benson but you can still sense that he respect everyone and what they do, especially

Gender roles stem from social norms; these norms are encouraged through many mainstream channels such as literature, public interactions, and especially media. From a very young age we are influenced to conform to gender roles and express ourselves the way society says we should, based on our biological sex. Classic children’s movies such as Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, and Mulan give off the impressions on how a girl should behave as well as a boy without us really recognizing the gender scripts, while simultaneously becoming accustomed to the ideology. A more modern example of a show that portrays a lot about gender roles and specifically fighting against today’s expectations of men and women is “The Fosters”, a television series that…

Everything presented in the media-whether it be through television, film, or other means-hinges upon some aspect of reality. Many believe that their television screen is a locked window that separates and protects them from the disturbing aspect of reality that is portrayed in the media. However, crime dramas, like Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Criminal Minds, allow the underlying aspects of reality to break through the locked windows of the television and unfold within the audience’s mind by showing the viewer that anyone can be victimized and that the people that one would least expect are more often than not the perpetrator of vicious crimes. Many naive viewers allow themselves to believe that they could never fall victim to…

In the beginning of the cop film era all cop heroes or ideal cops were white masculine men and maintained the gender norms in society. The ideal and masculine cop was shown as detectives who could always get the girls and their suspect by being quick to pull their gun. Crime fiction television shows from different countries portray the contrasting values and cultural ideologies societies of differing nations possess. A nation’s context greatly influences the crime fiction programs that it creates; current events occurring within a country and the contemporary issues that they deal with all shape the shows they produce. The American drama “Breaking Bad”, England’s “Sherlock Holmes” as well as the Australian show “Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries”, all demonstrate the contrasting views and values distinctive nations have and how they highlight these attitudes through their distinctive style of crime fiction shows. Both “Breaking Bad” and “Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries” subvert the conventions of the crime fiction…

The idea of gender roles is a construct of society. Throughout the existence of the human race, the genders have been expected to do two very different tasks in order to uphold society. There was generally no deviation from the roles, however, in modern society, it is no longer necessary for the genders to stick strictly to their expected jobs. A woman, as opposed to a man, can now be the supporter of the house. A man, as opposed to the woman, can now raise the family and care for the children.…
