Laurie Simmons Research Paper

Laurie Simmons is a photographer and film maker. She was born in Long Island, New York. She has a degree from Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia. Laurie is known for her doll house images and domestic scenes. Simmons has expressed herself through the use of props such as “dolls, ventriloquist dummies, objects on legs and occasionally people, to create” images with intensely psychological subtexts.” (IMDb) Simmons first worked with black and white prints then in 1978 she began shooting her doll house images in color. Simmons photos first started out with no figurines. Eventually, she added a female doll. Posing them in many different ways in the tiny doll houses. Sometimes sitting down at the table, other times standing at the kitchen sink or standing behind a chair. Simmons wanted to know more as “an artist who worked with photography as well as other media.” (pg. 456) “Much of Laurie Simmons work concerns the role of women in society.” (Wikipedia) Simmons, unique way she used miniature doll houses in her photography as art. Creating the miniature cowboy scenes brought life to a child’s imagination and a child causing them to think more about art in a new way. She then added dolls in a fish tank, then later took photos of underwater, then she added real people swimming. Simmons then experimented with “Teenette” dolls. Using them for advertisement for tourism. She would pose the dolls in different tourism spots and in group settings.
