With that responsibility, the role of the teacher within this structure has become paramount to the type of citizen-produced by the school system. The usage of low-key lighting and dark colors to create high contrast on screen is very common. Low-angle shots and Dutch camera angles, which are shot with tilted camera angles, are used to portray tension. Washington Booker T. Washington was a strong supporter of the industrial and vocational model of education. His style of education was geared toward educating and advancing the African American race in post-slavery America. He believed that African Americans, especially men, would be able to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, and prove themselves to be worthy contributors, to the white males. In 1895, he delivers the Atlanta Compromise, where he stresses the potential worth of African American men to a predominantly white male audience. Furthermore, Washington’s creation of the Tuskegee Industrial School was the most certain way for black people to advance, by learning skills and establishing a willingness to do manual labor.…
Lastly, the final essay in Kohl’s book, Creative Maladjustment and the Struggle for Public Education, talks about how learning to survive with only minimal moral and personal compromise in a compromised world. In the year of 1870, Franz, a borderline illiterate school child notices something different about his teacher. The generally scrutinizing school teacher M. Hamel, is teaching his final lesson in France, looking for refuge from the invading Prussia. The normally angry and unsatisfying school teacher shows Franz that his failure of his class is not exactly his fault and Franz should be proud of what he was able to learn. There is a stark contrast between the working and middle class schools’ interactions between teachers and students and those of the affluent professional and executive elite schools. At the working class school, many of the decisions the teachers made were made with neither an explanation nor the consultation of the students. Teachers also typically spoke to the students disrespectfully: the investigator seldom heard the teachers give an unsarcastic “please,” “let’s,” or “would you”; rather, they would directly order students to shut up. The students, meanwhile, often struggled to stay quiet and were resistant to the teacher’s orders. We have gone over lots of material and highlighted some of the historic developments, especially in France leading to the French Revolution and then in Europe and America to the twentieth century. In Outliers, Malcom Gladwell discusses about cultural legacy. He explains that cultural legacy affects the people’s behaviors and toward success. He uses the examples of Harlan, Kentucky people that their cultural legacy led them to behave aggressively. Similarly, in Stand and Deliver, Escalante uses cultural legacies of students to go against their cultural legacy which stops them from being successful by showing the right guidance and support.…
Freire speaks thoroughly about systems of education in his essay, he compares the relationships between teachers and their students in the banking concept of education and the problem posing method of education. He believes that some forms of education can provide students with power and control, but in most cases teachers submit their students to oppression. If Freire were to look at the history of Rodriguez’s schooling he would be quite appalled. Rodriguez contradicts all of Freire’s opinions and theories in regards to schooling.…
Some teachers prefer class to be silent and appreciate when students work on their own, while other teachers like to see students making comments and having discussions about the material. Likewise, when students discovered which teachers prefered which type of students they changed to fit into that teachers perfect student. Pope states, “The students may use the disguises to hide their weakness or to show off their strengths, but in either case, the teacher is privy to only a partial view, often resulting in a lack of useful knowledge about the students, or worse, misconstructions about the youth.” An example of this claim is Teresa, one of the students Pope studied, she excelled in her business classes, and when she was nominated for Outstanding Business Award, her Spanish teacher was perplexed. It is routine and expected from the students, they are not rebelling but meeting the expectations set for them. The student’s conformity to these expectations only feeds further categorization of the students as a group outside of mainline French culture. Within the walls the students are monolithically believed to be incapable of reading ‘real’ French texts, like Voltaire. Essayist, poet, and lecturer, Ralph Waldo Emerson, scrutinizes the educational system of the nineteenth century in his essay “Education”. Emerson’s purpose is to exploit the faults within the methods of teaching that were practiced and persuade educators to shift to the natural method. He adopts an academic, yet passionate tone in order to inspire teachers and parents to make the changes necessary to properly prepare students for the future. Emerson opens his essay by expressing that the key to proper education is respecting the pupil and applying the natural method.…
Freire introduces several key themes that combine to create the basis of his educational theory in his book Pedagogy of Freedom: Ethics, Democracy, and Civic Courage. Personally, I think that his theory displays an innovative way of looking at education and I agree with the arguments he presents. However, I believe that many of the cases he makes are idealized, and in practical application may be more complicated than he makes it seem. In an ideal education system this theory of freedom and innovation would reign dominant, however in the reality of education today, I think that there are certain structures in place that push back against Freire’s theory. One of the central themes in Freire’s writing revolves around the idea that the relationship between a student and a teacher is circular.…
Paulo Freire discussed the teacher-student contradiction in the text of “Pedagogy of the Oppressed.” This contradiction is when students are regulated by teachers. The teachers have the power over the students, which places them in a situation that limits their freedom as a whole. The Banking Concept of Education is the reason for the lack of freedom for students. This concept contradicts students as objects, and not individuals.…
