Lauren Tarshis’ drama and Ray Bradbury’s short story both use different approaches to convey a similar theme in “The Day Mrs.Parks was Arrested” and “All Summer in a Day” To prove this I have a line or two from “The Day Mrs.Parks was arrested and “All Summer in a Day”. “Policeman: Why didn’t you stand up?Mrs.Parks: Why do you all push us around? Policeman: I don't know. But the law is the law, and you are under arrest.” “But this is the day, the scientists predicted, they say, they know, the sun…” “All a joke!” said the boy, and seized her roughly. “Hey everyone, let's put her in the closet before the teacher comes.”

In both text, there was someone who was punished for standing up for what they believed in, Mrs.Parks and Margot. So my pick

Jennifer Thompson used a combination of wit and psychology to escape from Bobby Poole’s control the night of her attack. The first escape occurred when Thompson told Poole that she had a “phobia” of knives and ask that he set the knife that he was holding outside. Thompson told Poole that if she was able to hear the knife hit the metal of the car, she would be better able to “relax.” It is at this point, when Poole puts the knife away from Thompson, that she describes a “shift in power.” Thompson was also able to escape the attack mentally.…

The Heretic 's Daughter is a heartfelt and riveting tale of a family during the Salem witch trials who faced many perilous battles and had to learn the importance of faith and trust. The story is gripping and powerful and tells the tale from a realistic standpoint, beginning with a letter to Lydia from Sarah Carrier Chapman, telling about the witch trials and struggles she endured from her point of view, and ending with a detailed explanation of what became of her family after they were released. The Heretic 's Daughter goes to show that individuality can be threatening at first, however, it is necessary in society because contradictory personal values and morals make for a balanced society, proven by characters, Sarah, Grandmother, Margaret, and Aunt Mary, examples of women who were shamed for being different, but persevered to the end. Sarah Carrier, daughter of Martha and Thomas Carrier, was accused of being a witch multiple times throughout the story. She was threatened and tormented by other girls simply because she was different.…

With great haste, and ample determination, I stealthily jockeyed to a gap that lied between Margaret’s stool and the wall that supported her leaning torso; where she lied motionless, visibly cold, and secluded amidst the shadows. And to aid my daunting endeavor, aside from the limited visibility of the region, the men who remained alive, and provisionally well in attendance, were so consumed by those who stood vilely upon the stage, and the impending theatrics to transpire, that all subtle movement would remain imperceptible to their naked eyes. Therefore, my movements would have to be, and remain, just that. Subtle. However, there existed multitudes of other variables that could’ve potentially impeded the rescue of Margaret Vance, and the…

Book Review Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff Fates and Furies is a deviation from modern literary tradition that proves to deepen an intensely emotional tragedy. Is it a romance, a drama, a saga, or a beautiful narrative? The answer is yes, but truthfully, it is a modern day classic, tragedy. In light of the idea and with an ever-changing audience, if Shakespeare was alive and writing today, Fates and Furies would be a mirror of his craft. By the same token, the rich style of writing that makes it wonderfully different also, defies modern day literary standards, which adds another level of interesting to the reading experience.…

Today’s definition of a doppelganger is two people who look similar or identical, but it could also mean one person with two facades, or even two people who contrast each other in similar situations. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel, The Scarlet Letter, shows several examples of this masquerade taking different forms. Pearl contrasts Hester’s behavior while their punishment is executed; Pearl roams with a light heart and few cares, “her anarchic freedom contrasts with Hester’s continuous self-control” (Baym 68). In the same way, Hester remains more uplifted than Dimmesdale. While Hester has come to terms with her sin and has learned and grown from it, Dimmesdale keeps it locked away within his heart, which leads to his ultimate downfall.…

Once you experience something of such great significance, it is hard to let that go and move on. This universal theme can be seen in both the song “Want You Back” by 5 Seconds of Summer, and the short story, “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury. In “Want You Back” the band sings about a girl whom they have left and will always want back. In “All Summer in a Day” the author tells about about students on Venus, who are in the absence of the sun and are grieving the loss of it too. In both of these selections, the band and the author use imagery and repetition to convey the theme.…

Beloved and Pearl, the two spirit-like characters of Toni Morrison’s Beloved and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, share one important theme for the main characters of Sethe and Hester. They are both people that are a consequence of an unfortunate event, that of adultery and premature death, that serve as a sign of a priority that Hester and sethe must take care of. For Beloved, Sethe's priority is to begin to stop denying the past and facing it and for Hester, Pearl serves as reminder of why she must reconcile with her past and her actions. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s and Toni Morrison’s Pearl and Beloved have the freedom to operate outside society’s grip and give greater understanding to the novels dynamics.…

I attended the last session of the Women and Gender Studies conference. There was around a panel of 10 college students. Each girl has the job of taking a piece of literature and revising it to expose the white privilege present in the situation. One of the goals of the students writing these pieces was to show how race, class, and gender all interact with one another. The first 8 girls use a piece of literature from the 1970’s, in which a group of African American children go to a toy shop with their neighborhood caretaker, Mrs. Moore.…
