BRIEF SYNOPSIS:
LAURA WARD has fond memories of singing with her mother, ROXANNE WARD and her sister, EVE, at church. The two sisters look like each other with one striking differences; Laura’s skin is White and her mother and sister are Black.
Laura, now 32, works as a doctor along side her boyfriend, DR. RICK LAWRENCE (28, Black). Laura works with amputees doing research with new prosthesis, but she doesn’t fill fulfilled in her role or in her relationship with Rick. She’s offered an opportunity to work with amputees in Rwanda. She’s reluctant to accept the assignment, but eventually does. She feels that she needs a break from Rick. …show more content…
Laura decides that she wants to legally adopt Corene and bring her back to the United States, but the laws in Rwanda are strict. Laura manipulates the system to get Corene a Visa claiming that she’s in the research study. Laura says good-bye to Jean Paul. She doesn’t know where they will see each other again. She tells him not to wait for her.
They arrive in Chicago. Corene struggles to adjust to her new world. She learns to play the piano, which helps her hand heal. Corene grows closer to Eve who fosters her musical talent. Laura is protective of her and resents Eve’s interference, especially when she learns that Rashan is helping her. Laura eventually learns from Rashan what happened the night that her mother died. She overdosed and Rashan found her. He tried to save her, but couldn’t. Her mother left Rashan a letter for Laura. He gives her the letter. Laura discovers that her mother cheated on her father, not the other way around.
Laura and Rick try to reunite, but it doesn’t work. Laura fights in court to keep Corene in the US. Laura and her father join forces. They argue that Corene is a Child of the Genocide in Rwanda, but the judge orders Corene to return to
