Laura Tohe’s goal is guilt and understanding, in her many poems, she claims how white people made her childhood difficult. Many people who read these poems today feel sad, guilty, and have regrets for the things their ancestors have done in the past. This was her goal, to make people understand what they have done and not to do it again towards any race. Even though it was a poem, she still managed to get her point across in a more powerful way. Since letters are intended to be personal and typically more moving, it gets people to feel the emotion more. Martin Luther King was stuck in jail and decided to let the public know why and how. He wanted the public to know what he did, why he was put in jail and how the judicial system discriminates against his race. He used this style of writing because it was more heartfelt, personal, and real. Many people analyzed this and were moved by this long piece of text.
