Schlessinger was born in January of 1947 in Brooklyn, New York to a Jewish father and a Catholic mother. She has described her childhood as unloving and unpleasant, and her family, dysfunctional. An unauthorized biography of the author dispels some of this, but she and her mother remained estranged throughout her adult life. She earned her Ph.D. in Physiology and thereafter, got her big break into talk radio after an infamous steamy affair with a high-profile shock jock in Los Angeles.
