Their Ma and Pa not only taught the children reading and arithmetic, but also about God and how to live by hand making everything. They were very poor growing up, so the children had very few, very simple toys. They each had either a cornhusk or rag doll, in addition to the paper dolls that Ma would make for them. One time, when they were butchering the pig and Pa found the bladder, blew it up, and gave it to the girls. This sounds kind of gross, but it was just like an old fashioned balloon them.Every day, there was a specific chore to do that day, like washing, baking, or sewing and mending. After they got that done, then they would feed the chickens and milk the cow while Pa plowed in the fields. They made all of their food themselves, but every once in awhile, Pa would go to town and pick up some candy for the girls and some flour and sugar for Ma to bake with. Sometimes, Pa might even come back from his trip with some pretty fabric to make dresses with, different colors and prints for all of the girls. Pa’s trips to town were rare, though. The family had very little money to spare, so they couldn’t splurge.
