Ann Richards presented her Keynote Address to the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in 1988. Descriptive analysis aims to understand the purpose of a work, and the methods used to achieve that purpose. There are six elements, not including purpose, that can be strategically used to achieve a goal: persona, audience, tone, structure, supporting materials, and other strategies (Campbell and Burkholder 21). This rhetorical analysis examines how Ann Richards uses persona during her Keynote Address to the 1988 Democratic National Convention to convince listeners that the current government is dividing the country and that equality for all is important.…
Student A’s journey to defining her presidential role occurred within her first month and a half of her presidency. Her presidency was mapped out by her self determination to create a vision and authentic her role. Phase three was established during a conflict with another member who was not meeting the organization’s requirements. Student A stayed true to herself in this situation by confronting the situation with confidence and did not rely on me to advise her. She defined her identity as the president and kept her stance on the…

Burke-Litwin Model The Burke Litwin model of Organizational Change and Performance showcases the cause and effect relationship between 12 interconnected dimensions within an organization (Burke, Litwin, 1992). The model is divided into two separate factor domains, transformational and transactional. The transformational factors are high ranking order changes which are core to an organizations performance and need to be addressed first, to make long term significant organizational change (Burke, Litwin, 1992). While transactional factors are dimensions which are more easily changed, but may only be temporary if the transformational changes are not aligned properly.…
Carrie Chapman Catt, in her Address to Congress on Women’s Suffrage, effectively claims that a woman’s right to vote is not only necessary, but also inevitable. Her goal is to convince United States Senators and House of Representatives of the idea that women are not inferior to men. Her approach is planned in its attempt to persuade the minds of not only men, but also women to think differently. The speech itself was based on logic and reasoning, therefore making it impossible for her opposition to challenge. Catt urges Americans to support women’s rights by effectively utilizing logic to establish a sense of trust and unity within her audience.…
Escorted by only six men, Queen Elizabeth I went among her subjects to deliver a speech on August 19, 1588 in order to prepare them for an upcoming invasion by the Spanish Armanda. Through her speech, you can pick up that Elizabeth's dominant trait is her confidence. Elizabeth shows confidence in herself, her people, and in England's dominance over the rest. Queen Elizabeth is completely comfortable about who she is and what she is capable of. In her speech, she shows no signs of being unsure of how she plans to protect her people.…
Ramani Goode Fannie Lou Hamer delivered a speech on behalf of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party to the credentials committee of the Democratic National Convention in 1964 to highlight the gruesome realities facing African Americans, especially those who attempted to vote. Her revelations about the methods used to withhold voting rights and the violent discrimination against blacks who tried to vote shocked the nation, but the most disturbing aspects of her speech were personal stories of the brutality wrought upon her. Hamer’s speech is reflective of the obstacles she faced throughout her life. Her depiction of racist atrocities gripped the attention of the nation at a time when President Johnson was trying to…
Twenty-five years ago, two women, brilliant and brave women, gave a landmark speech on the AIDS epidemic at the 1992 Democratic National Convention in New York City. Elizabeth Glaser, who was one of the two women speakers had contracted AIDS from a blood transfusion, passed it on to her children, and would shortly lose her life to it in 1994 (Lucas, S. & Medhurst, M., 2009). Elizabeth, who during her speech, referred to herself as the “strange spokesperson” for such a group – was a well-to-do white woman. After all, Americans during this time persisted in stigmatizing it as an affliction of non-whites, drug addicts, low socio-economic status peoples and/or gay men (Lucas, S. & Medhurst, M., 2009). Elizabeth started out just a mom, fighting for the life of her children and her own.…
Margaret Thatcher was Great Britain’s former prime minister and in 2014 on June 11th, she delivered a eulogy in honor of Ronald Reagan to the people of America. She had worked closely with President Reagan throughout his presidency. [D1:Rephrase] Margaret Thatcher used several techniques in her speech to help prove her point. The top three techniques that Thatcher used that jumped out the most\were the many quotes from Ronald Reagan, a few examples of pathos, and a majority of the speech was filled with positive diction.…
Susan B. Anthony devoted her life to end women’s suffrage, and fought to prove that women had the right to vote. In the late 1800s voting was not permitted for women, and if they did they might get arrested. Anthony wrote and delivered stub speeches but didn’t have much success doing so. Nonetheless many years after she died her dedication made an impact in women’s right to vote, and in 1920 the 19th amendment was passed. In her speech Anthony talks about ending women’s suffrage, and her story of how she got arrested for trying to vote.…
Fannie Lou Hamer’s background would give her the prerogative to speak on the problems of bigotry which promotes the effectiveness of her speech. After failure of registering to vote “she and her friends were shot at that night by the KKK” (“Fannie Lou Hamer…”). Hamer mentioned that “One white man… pulled my dress – I pulled my dress down and he pulled my dress back up.” These two instances display how Hamer was targeted and violated against as an African-American and as a woman. Her experience served as evidence of how violent she would be treated without federal protection of voting rights.…
During the course of my high school career, I have come to the realization that going through high school is like winning a golden ticket to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. Everyone has a different experience with their golden ticket. Some are repeat winners and some leave the experience too soon. I believed that when I started high school, all of my childhood fun would end. When I walked through the doors of Council Rock South High School South in the summer of 2013, I was unable to anticipate my future ventures, nor could I predict that my belief would be challenged by the loss of three classmates.…
This is why faculty leadership is so vital.” These words by Anne Weaver Hart outline the structure that faculty bring to the college community. We might not realize it but we learn from our Professors all the time even when they are not particularly teaching the class material. One Friday I was having dinner with a group of friends and one of them went on about how we just had to take this one English class before leaving Vanderbilt because the professor Haerin Shin had changed her life. It was not Professor Shin’s class content that had moved my friend but the professor herself.…
