What is the renaissance? The renaissance was a time period in which people grew as an individual. People around that time period grew intellectually and artistically. Many people started to build sculptures about the human body, others drew paintings, while other express what they though in writing. Laura Cereta became a writer she wrote many letters that address what she though, "Laura Cereta to Bibulus Sempronius: Defense of the Liberal Instruction of Women." It was written around the quattrocento period a period of time where the renaissance was present at that time. Even though the renaissance was a time of rebirth of intelligence, reason and expression this did not apply to women.

This letter show Cereta's defense toward the intelligence of women. The renaissance help one to see that the renaissance time period was meant more for men than for women. This allow one to see that women rebirth did not really exist among the society. She begins her letter by having to defend her self that a women as intelligent as her is not impossible. This time period shows that women were inferior to men. She says, " You wait perpetually in ambush to entrap my lovely sex, and overcome by your hatred seek to trample me underfoot and dash me to the earth"(81). It demonstrates how men were angry around that she was so intelligent that most believed she was a rare women. She was rare around that time period to society because women were choosing lesser goals. She writes, "The explanation is clear: women have been able by nature to be exceptional but have chosen lesser goals. For some women are concerned. with.. parting their hair, lovely dresses, decorating with pearls and gems"(83). Women are deceived by all these external things but she is does not choose to be deceived but to gain as much intelligence as she could, even beside society opposition.
