The season, in this case winter, the laundromat and “Bing’s Grocery” are three elements that play a role in Gracie’s brave decision because of her thoughts towards each one of them. “[Harvey will] be pissed if he wakes up to a pile of dog hair on his pillow on Christmas morning, which is the big reason I’m at the Soap’n Suds on the coldest day of the year” (1). Gracie’s actions have been ordered by Harvey since the day of their wedding and this short quotation demonstrates this controlling relationship. At the end of the story, when she decides to leave the laundromat without her belongings, it is like if she chooses to get out of her toxic marriage.
