Laundress Analysis Essay

The Laundress painting appears to be an oil painting depicting the usage, of a laundry room. Interestingly enough most of the people (including the laundress), have their backs turned, stopping the viewers from seeing their faces. The artist choice to complement this by making each character with very soft forms, and blurred faces. You immediately get the sense that the area is very foggy. Most of the paint the artist chose to use gives off a Taupe color which puts most of the people in the background slowly fading away. It also causes the painting to feel warmer, as it blends back in space. We can tell from the colors and the massive amount of steam in the background, that the room is relatively hot. Most of the women working in the laundry room don’t seem too put off by this. This is clearly an everyday event. …show more content…
Her dress is a somewhat dull yellow color, making her seem filthy as if she has been working for long periods of time. This seems to draw the viewer's attention secondly to the red cloth, causing the viewers eyes to scroll from the bottom and loop back around once they’ve reached the top. The laundress appears to be washing someone's clothes while the woman next to her catches her attention.
The main areas of this painting seems to fall on two sections. Using an out of frame lightsource. The artist draws attention to first the man in the red blanket, and then to the laundress. The light starts from the top left of the frame and stretches down over both of them. This works well to contrast against the main background and bring the main two characters forward. It also clearly reveals that the two are connected in someway. It’s not clear on first glance what the connection is, but there's a connection

The artist uses complementary colors that tug equally at the eye. She uses a dynamic contrast of red and green to two of the shapes. Due to this, the artist keeps the viewers eyes from resting on one area of the composition for far too long. In this painting, Dorothea uses value contrast to show the differences in dark and light. While some tones appear lighter due to the artist adding white as if illuminated, other tones are darkened as if to suggest that a light has caused the shapes to have created shadows.…

“Listen, my children, and you shall hear Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere...” (Longfellow par. 1). These words by Longfellow seem to spring into the mind when looking at The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere by Grant Wood. Grant Wood’s painting presents an idealized portrayal of a well-known event in American history in a time when when America had lost its luster. Upon first looking at the painting, the eye is drawn immediately to the church that stands in the foreground.…

In the painting, Christ is illuminated by being colored in with very pale colors, but he surrounded by a myriad of colors. Each person depicted in the painting, especially those in the foreground, are each wearing clothes that have different hues, such as the Virgin is wearing blue while the Saint John is wearing red. The colors of each of their clothing are quite intense adding to the energy of the scene. There is also a mix of warm and cool tones throughout the painting, which adds the disorder of the painting. Another important aspect of the painting is the use of color in the middle ground and background.…

Joseph Nicéphore Niépce took the first image in 1826. The film was bad quality but the photo taken from Joseph's window showed specific techniques like symmetry, contrast in blacks, whites and tones of gray and had sharp angles and lines drawing the viewer in different directions. A photo is a window into what the photographer is seeing in their world, like Joseph Nicéphore Niépce. Consequently, Henri Cartier and Gregory Crewdson used techniques to emphasise and evoke different meanings and feelings towards the viewer. Whether, this was happiness or uneasiness, staged or not, the images are a portal into the photographer's world.…

Most of the colors are not very bright and do not have a great intensity to them. The darkness of the window is not bright, and the green of the coat is very muted but the reflection of the lights in the window does have a little intensity. There is also the highlighting and illumination by the lights on her shoulders and arms of the woman’s coat. The yellow of the woman’s hat is also bright which helps to draw attention to the woman and has a great contrast against the darker coloration of the woman’s coat. The purple color that the dark window has is very complimentary to the yellow of her hat and to the yellow of the lights in the reflection.…
