Laughing gas has been used as an anesthesia for dentistry since 1844. Up to today, it has been used for many other medical procedures and surgeries, but it is widely known and used for oral surgeries. The procedure of laughing gas in surgery is very simple, Dinitrogen monoxide (N2O) is a gas in which you inhale. When you inhale the colourless gas, it reaches the brain in around 20 seconds and it starts to relax your body and develop pain-killing properties to keep you composed and calm. You still retain conscious, unlike general anesthesia, but you start to feel a sense of carefree and ease while the surgery is being performed in your mouth. After the surgery, it takes around 3 to 5 minutes for the gas to be cleared out of the body after the …show more content…
This means that Dinitrogen monoxide have covalent intramolecular forces as have they are covalent compounds. Covalent bonds are when valence electrons are shared between two atoms in order to reach a full outer shell. As a result, covalent bonds are very strong because the two nuclei are gripping on the shared electron, resulting in closer proximately and requiring more energy to break apart the bond. All that will be left is just nitrogen and oxygen, which wouldn't be effective as Dinitrogen monoxide (laughing gas) since the nitrogen is needed for the relaxation and oxygen is needed in order to allow the patient to breath while under the drug. Just having nitrogen could kill you, due to the lack of oxygen, meaning that you can't have one element without the other element.
