The event I attended was the Cuentos y Culturas Latinx Heritage Month Showcase hosted by Say Sí. The event ran from September 23rd to the 24th. The performance was only available on the opening days, however the exhibit portion was open to the public for a few weeks after. The performance was an original stage production that portrays one of the creation stories from the Coahuiltecans, who were Native Americans that lived in the southern regions of texas. The name of the production is Napako, meaning “our journey”. The theatre company collaborated with Gary Perez, a Native American Church Cultural Preservation Officer, and Joe Tellez, a Professional Geologist, in their research with a rock wall painting known as the white shaman Pannel. The play shows the colonization of the Native Americans in south Texas and how the Spanish demonized their practices and converted them to Christianity. They showed the perspective of how the Spanish tried to kill Native American cultures. Much of the background knowledge I had learned the year before because I had also participated in a collaboration with Perez and Tellez. However, when observing as an audience member, I was able to focus more on the infliction the Spanish had on the Coahuiltecans, their culture, and its effect on the present. The effects I feel are oblivious details, it's just that for whatever reason we ignore them. I am familiar with the fact the Europeans came with diseases that Native Americans were vulnerable to but it reminded how pressing that must have been for Native Americans. Then to lose a great portion of your population as well as your culture is devastating. It makes me wonder why my history books while growing up have never referred to any of the many terrible events concerning the well-being Native Americans as a form or type of
