Carroll reveled his thesis quickly in the book and continued to develop it throughout. Carroll’s thesis highlighted the oppression and racism Tejanos suffered in Texas and specifically the Nueces Strip. He stated just how difficult it was for Tejanos growing up, and the hardships that many individuals would experience throughout life. Carroll primarily told the story of Felix family’s strife and efforts to afford him a proper burial. While this was the main story involved in the book, the main thesis was broader in its attempt to reveal the political climate and the ideas and steps involved in the Chicano movement in Texas.…

What did they do to begin claiming recognition and rights within U.S. society after the war? Many Mexican Americans were perceived as heroes such as navy sailor Hector Acedo who survived the torpedoing of his ship. Pedro de Valle who was the first Puerto Rican to reach the rank of Major General when he took command of the first marine division in 1944.…

It does however represent a typical case of the struggle for survival of minorities. Texians were a Texas minority in 1836. As a minority, they differ from the rest in terms of culture, beliefs, philosophy, etc. One of the main attributes of the Texians culture was their attachment to the US model of democracy and universal civil rights. Because this model was not shared by Mexico’s government, the Texian minority was left at odds with the rest of the population.…
The film Ethnic Notions goes into detail about historical stereotypes towards blacks in an all-white society. And its need to be able to justify racism in an ever changing society. The images displayed in the films are quite disheartening, but accurately portray race relations in America, and its quite affect on African American citizens. Ethnic Notions begins to allow the viewer to understand racial consciousness in America.…
"HUELGA! VIVA LA RAZA!" Cries and shouts of protest could be heard, rumbling the school grounds as Mexican-American students walked out of their homeroom classrooms to join their fellow protesters on the streets of downtown Los Angeles. Students, families, and even teachers held hands and joined one another to proclaim the corruption and racism held in Lincoln High School, along with the many schools part of the L.A. school system. Protesting went on for weeks, blowout after blowout, peaceful protestors who simply wanted their fair share of an education faced with ignorance and violence.…

Not only are there songs and poems that represent the people of New York, but there are also a few movies. West Side Story is a good example of how the people of New York lived in the 1960s. In the movie, there are immigrants, from Puerto Rico, and some of the immigrants explain that they do not feel as privileged as the country-born Americans who live in New York. Although this was back in the 1960s, there is still a lot of racism in America now and immigrants who move from their home countries to live in America, I feel, are being treated the same way, or in some cases worse, as the Puerto Rican immigrants in West Side…
Sylvia Morales served as the producer in Chicano! History of the Mexican American Civil Rights Movement, a 1996 documentary which illustrated the Mexican-American civil rights movement. Migrant farmer workers were plagued with nothing but the consequences of poverty. In their environment, they made only a few dollars a day, sacred resources, and limited opportunities for an education. The farm workers were stuck in a trapped cycle of hard work with barely a chance to move up socially.…
With a story like “Men on the moon” by Simon Ortiz, finding clarity can be hard. The main theme can be jumbled up within the story confusing language, although that could be the point of the story. It seems that Ortiz has used this style to convey a level of understanding within the characters towards the reader. Each character deals with the moon landing in a different way and with a different level of comprehension. Although in the story the moon landing is the main focus, I perceived it to represent the outside world.…

Throughought the history of the United Sates after the colonization period, minority groups have suffered through appalling circumstances mandated by White Americans. They were targeted for discrimination at early ages regardless of gender, and these acumens varied from verbal confrontations to violent deaths. The reasons as to why minority groups had to undergo these preposterous events were only because of the difference of skin color and distinct language. One specific group that agonized during the 1800’s were Mexican Americans. Before taking over California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico, this was Mexico’s undisturbed territory (1).…

Chicano is a very common word in a Mexican American population dense area. Many say that the word Chicano is slang for Mexicano, and others say it’s a unique way to call those first-born Americans that come from Mexican parents. To historians and sociologists, the word “Chicano” was used for those who struggled between identifying themselves as Mexicans or as Americans. This word represents everything that we’ve overcome since WWII and before that. This word first came as a movement, The Chicano Movement, which fought for many of the same equal rights that African American’s were for.…
