Latinos In American Culture Essay

American culture is known as all of the different cultures of the word that have come together, and is always changing and conforming to the immigrants. Today, all over the United States, we see that there is a major impact of Latinos throughout our culture. Some of the different ways that we see an impact of Latinos throughout our culture is in music, food, television, and civil rights. One main impact that Latinos have made on the American Culture would be through music. In the late 1950s, Richie Valens was lighting up the music charts in America. Cesar Chaves worked to get equality for farm workers. Chavez and others protested for higher wages. He also urges Mexican Americans to register to vote so that they could have a voice in what was happening. Joan Baez voice showed the need for equality and peace. In the 1960s, she became a voice for everybody and became an icon for protest and positive change in America. The young people were drawn to her folk songs that she wrote about the problems that were going on. She sang, “We Shall Overcome,” at the Civil Rights March in Washington, D.C. From this, her voice and face were linked to the American protest movements. Since she had a Hispanic background she was subjected to racial slurs and segregation in her childhood. This gave Baez a unique sound to her music because she knew how it felt to be discriminated against and powerless about it all. Over the decades, Hispanic culture has soared and there has been greater interest in their culture. The Hispanic culture has also merged with the American culture that has reinvented the American culture in terms of art and sports.
