Latino Culture Interview Report

Latino and Japanese culture was explored during the weekly interviews. The first individual that Dr. Garzon interviewed was from Latino culture. The interviewees name was Orlando. Dr. Garzon started the interview by asking Orlando to give a little family background. Orlando stated that he was born into a black beans and rice family (Garzon, 2010). He then went on to discuss how his parents migrated to Puerto Rico from Cuba, he states that his parents migrated because of the harsh government (Garzon, 2010). It seems that his family ultimately migrated to have exposure to religious freedoms. He mentioned how his father was a Christian Cuban and how that ultimately hindered him from attending college in Cuba (Garzon, 2010). One thing that really surprised me in the interview is how Orlando mentions how he keeps in contact with his family members even in Cuba. I can tell that family is an essential in Latino culture. I enjoyed Orlando discussing his experience when attending college in West Virginia. He talked about the difference in language, meals, and environment. In the interview, Orlando discussed a time when he heard a student say “tamata and pata sandwich”. I also liked how he broke down some of the characteristics that people of the Latino culture. I noticed that in Latino culture that family plays an essential part in an individual’s life. In Japanese culture family is not as essential. Secondly, I noticed that in Latino culture individuals are afraid to express their emotions. In Japanese culture individuals are taught to hid their emotions. Lastly, I noticed Latino individuals tend to be loving and caring. In Japanese culture individuals tend to be serious and stern. The interviews provided me with a wealth of knowledge that I was unaware
