Latin 1 Observation

Decent Essays
My observations of the Latin 1 curriculum at Regis Jesuit High School took place over four weeks in Fall 2015, during the end of the first six-week grading period and the beginning of the second. Regis Jesuit is a Catholic, college preparatory high school serving young men and young women. The unique school model is co-divisional, offering single-gender instruction by operating as two separate divisions—the Boys Division and the Girls Division. The campus is open, and there are opportunities for students to be together outside of the classroom, but the academic context is single-gender. Mr. Carroll teaches Latin 1 in the Boys Division to a group of young men in ninth-grade. Regis Jesuit classes are on a block schedule. They meet for 80 minutes

Wednesday, September 16th, 2015 I did my observation of Paul Dunbar Middle School. Some of the first things I noticed when I entered the school was how enormous the school’s population is and how the school was mostly Hispanic and African American students. I arrived at the front desk and was asked by the assistant principal what was my preference of classroom. She then proceeded to take me the section of the school where the ESE classes are held. ESE stands for exceptional student education classes.…

How are white educators better suited to educate a minority, when they culturally do not understand nor take the time to understand their mannerisms and customs of other cultures? How education is racially divided, in seeing poor black students as less advantaged over their majority peers who may have more adequate opportunities at home. The first issue in this book sets up black education in America, poor black education. This education set up is meant to stifle in order to teach ‘proper’ writing and language skills.…

“Look at this place, all of you,” Schäffer said to the others, observing the architecture at the front part of the school, “And examine the wonder of this place. Splendid as it is, every one of us can safely agree that it is gleaming beacon to one of those days when the Children’s Paradise was just beginning to make its appearance in the shape as it is to this day. Someday, and I am not sure when, but when the time will come for us to see the Children’s Paradise soaring higher than it ever had, I would like to see ourselves at the forefront of this renaissance. The rebirth of American Catholic Education, its sudden ushering of the Greater American Catholic School System did not end with the beginning of the Republic; nor did it end, when the Great Leaps Westward marked the beginning of the attempts made to expand both Programs all the way to the West Coast. It continues even to this day, for there is much that…

At the middle school level, units of study that can be integrated across multiple subject areas can be an effective method for increasing student understanding. Integrated units allow students to think and process information in a manner that is consistent with how they will think and process information when they are done with school. Life does not present people with a series of math problems followed by a series of English questions. In life, subjects are an interwoven tapestry that we all have to navigate (Wormeli 137).…

The poor status of our nation’s education system today persists us to reminisce upon a time in our country where changes in our inner city schools happened after minority voices were heard. On March 1968, after having enough of their inadequate school environments, the young Chicanos of East LA organized a mass high school walkout. These individuals were revolutionaries during a time their voices were ignored; they were forced to remain victims of a discriminatory school system unashamed in perpetuating racial biases and stereotypes. Today, when one reflects upon this time of racial and educational turbulence, it becomes evident that although these strong-willed and tenacious individuals fought tirelessly for improved school conditions, our…

Through his Ten Colloquies, Desiderius Erasmus began to develop a way of thinking that Protestant reformers such as Martin Luther, Huldrych Zwingli, and John Calvin, would eventually mimic and adapt. Erasmus lived and wrote in a period of change, causing his writings to be accepted and built on. Arguably, the reformer who benefited the most from Erasmus’s writings is Martin Luther, the founder of Lutheranism. Other Protestant religions are based off of Luther’s original model, meaning that people today are still affected by the teachings of Erasmus and Luther. Throughout his colloquies Erasmus portrays several important religious themes such as how to gain a spot in Heaven, the usefulness of saints, and the importance of a person reading and…

A defining moment, for those fortunate enough, is one’s college career. It is a time of self-discovery, new experiences, independence, but above all, the time to work toward a higher education. Adrienne Rich, in her convocation speech “Claiming an Education,” highlights the vital importance of higher education. Moreover, Rich seeks to empower the young women in the audience to seize control of their education. In her speech, Rich explains that it is not only important for women to attain a college degree, but to take command of their education (and their lives in general) by resisting society’s traditional view of women.…
