Lateral violence on an institutional level is a trickledown effect. If there is no respect in the workplace lateral violence occurs. The root of the problem comes from within the workplace, where bullying and incivility is allowed and seen as the cultural norm. The employer blames the victim as means to avoid responsibility. Lateral violence also comes in the form of structural bullying where “supervisors or line managers are taking actions perceived as inequitable or retaliatory involving scheduling, workload assignments or pressuring nurses not to use their own time” (Pontus, 2011).
