Late July Poetic Devices

I decided to choose a contemporary piece to write about. Shakey Graves is an Americana musician from Austin, Texas. Alejandro Rose-Garcia is his real name but after a night by the campfire with his friends; Shakey Graves was the Indian guide name given to him playfully by his friends. He has quite a unique sound and plays three instruments at once while singing. You’ll probably see him playing in his hat, wife-beater, skinny jeans, and proper boots. His music is a cross between folk, rock and roll, and blues. His one-man band set up is what he is best known for but he recently signed with Dualtone (same studio that signed with The Lumineers) so recently came out with a new album produced by them. I will be analyzing a song called Late July that he plays alone.
Late July is played only by Shakey Graves but there’s quite the twist to how he plays this song; he plays guitar, drums, and also vocals. He has a homemade portable suitcase drum kit that he plays with both his feet (one foot hitting the tambourine the other hitting the drum) while

He isn’t creating music just be signed by some big label (which is what many contemporary artists are trying to achieve). “I wanted to figure out how to acquire fans right now, different from the old model where artists were pushed at you. I spent the last three years building a fan base that felt like they discovered me, which they did. That’s something no one can ever take away” Shakey Graves told the Austin Chronicles. This artistic attitude really comes out in his music in my opinion. In Late July there is suck variety in the tempo, melody, and rhythm but the mood never changes. He uses the same musical method but has explored the hell out of it, which is a contemporary approach in music. When listening to Late July I have to move my body, even if I don’t know what’s coming (which many times you don’t know what to expect because the lack of

Iconic vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson [1941-2016] was honored in a musical celebration colored by great performances of dearest fellows from different generations. In addition to an incredible instrumentalist, Hutcherson was a master composer who left an indelible mark over the course of a rich five-decade career. Classic records like Dialogue, Components, Oblique, and Cirrus will be forever in my heart. At the time we arrived at the packed St. Peter’s Church, vibraphonist Joe Locke was reading something he had written for Hutcherson, an extremely impactful influence on him.…

In Richmond Virginia a fire at a theatre with numerous deaths led to many actions. One of them being a speech delivered by Rev. Robert May. Within it laid a writing genius to help persuade the crowd to his view. It started with an appeal to the emotions to hinder the rational judgment of crowed and the initial presentation of his goal before his real argument. Transitioning into a section where he presented the arguments for going to the theater and provided a convincing counter argument for all of them.…

The post-World War II era saw the rise of blues musician and song-writer Jimmy Reed, born Mathis James Reed on a plantation in Dunleith, Mississippi on September 6, 1925. He developed an early understanding of the harmonica and guitar from his close friend Eddie Taylor but never progressed much beyond the fundamentals. They sang together in churches and retained their friendship throughout their careers, as it was Eddie who was responsible for bringing Jimmy’s career to its peak of success. His distinctive yet simple style was easily imitated and therefore resonated with the mainstream audience. His trademark delivery was lazy and downtempo, contrasted by the sharp harmonica bursts and stable guitar loops.…

A few twists and turns down dirt roads and a stretch of paved highway lead back to the combination of working space and lifestyle museum that serves as Williams' office. It's clear that he's invested some of his money into his passion for hunting. Although he has many impacts on society, she said that his music is probably his biggest impact. He remains an inspiration to Alan Jackson, Kid Rock, Jamey Johnson and other followers.…

His songs clearly fall into the hip-hop genre, but have a jazz and gospel twist. His songs have been called “colorful” and “creative” due to his uncommon styles. His music style is not the only kind that stands out, his fashion is fairly unconventional too. He has designed a few Chicago White Sox hats and strives to “redefine fashion” by wearing clothes that set him apart, like overalls as I mentioned in the first paragraph. This is partly to help self advertise, since he does not have a studio to put his name out for him.…

    Ron Rash Poetry Analysis

Christian belief and practice in the poems by Ron Rash and Robert Morgan cause tension among human beings due to the human experience differing from how belief makes it out to seem. Belief causes the world to seem more perfect than what is understood through human experience and leads one to believe nothing bad can happen to a good person, although experience dictates that it happens daily. Tension can arise in many ways such as from experience dictating that earth’s vices are alluring and addictive, while belief interprets it as foul and rotten. Belief can also cause the world to seem much easier and just than what an individual may learn through human experience. One may too find tension in the ethereal and unseen aspects of belief that doesn’t…

It was warm, humid and cloudy on the day of our Jack Johnson concert. Despite the warmth, it was a perfect day to be outside and sitting on the lawn at the DTE Music Center to enjoy some relaxing tunes. Jack Johnson is classified as a folk and acoustic rock musician, however I compare him between a calmer version of John Mayer and Jason Mraz combined. He plays an acoustic electric guitar, but his guitar playing skills are nowhere near as good as his writing skills. He plays basic guitar chords, but his lyrics make the music.…

Although the band that played on this recording was Count Basie’s Kansas City Seven, many of its members would also be a part of the Count Basie Orchestra. The song begins with Basie playing a few measures of piano as a strong walking bass accompanies him. Jo Jones’s drumming is barely audible because he steps out of the way for the band to play over him. Soon the main riff of the song comes in, and Count Basie interjects perfectly timed notes in between repetitions of the riff. These notes are examples of Basie’s use of musical space to create groove.…

“ It would be neat, if with the New Year” by Jimmy Baca is a short poem, which holds a deep significance about the past and future, about things that have been parts of our ordinary life. In the poem, the speaker desires a fresh start in his life, but in the end he soon realizes that he can never throw away his past to move on completely. With the skillful uses of symbolism, metaphor, imagery, and narrative poetry, the author successfully leads the mystery and depth of the poem to the readers. To begin with, Baca purposely creates a diversion in the title and the first two sentences to surprise the reader later in the poem. As first, he believes that moving on is the right thing, “It would be neat if with the New Year” (line 1), which shows…

INTRODUCTION The world’s many dystopian debacles including, poverty, war and capitalism are commonly disputed though the effective manipulation of protest songs. Cambridge Dictionary defines protest song as a song that expresses disapproval, typically regarding politics. Song-writers have manipulated stylised literacy conventions since the 1960s to empower mass populations, return voice to those who have been marginalised, influence people’s cultural perspectives and widen social ideologies. The songs “White Fella Black Fella” (1985) by Warumpi Band and “I Am Austrlian” (1987) by The Seekers both contain the literacy techniques of: meaning, imagery, language, tone, and style which have been effectively mastered to clearly convey their parallel protest messages.…

A father’s love for his son is not always seen. In the poem, “Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden, the narrator is talking about how he regrets not realizing and thanking his father for all the suffering and good that his father has done for him. The author uses imagery and diction to portray a better image about the narrator's regret for not noticing his father’s good deeds sooner. One of the more commonly used literary element in the poem “Those Winter Sundays” is imagery. The author uses imagery to emphasize the regrets that the speaker has about his father.…
