Retirement can be a difficult period for elders because they are faced with adjusting to living on a fixed income, which is particularly challenging for low-income individuals. For many elders, retirement can signify the loss of their identity. However, to combat this problem and loss of professional identity, many seniors participate in civic engagement, which produces a newfound sense of connection to their community and society. According to Liang & Lou (2012), research on what constitutes a meaningful retirement in urban China, is the pursuit of a balanced state of mind which increases resiliency in retirement because despite the challenges they focus on appreciating their happiness. Studies on ethnic minority elders in the United States revealed, that despite their disadvantages, they were able to able to use their human agency to challenge the structural constraints and utilize their strengths to evoke a sense of balance in regards to the challenges faced by retiring. Despite the compounding issues and difficulties associated with aging, elders are interested in leaving a legacy and they enjoy fulfilling the elder function of reminiscing with others, sharing their stories and their knowledge accumulated throughout their lives with others, which is associated with
