Late Adulthood: A Case Study

During Roberts late adulthood, he has gone through a lot of changes in many areas of his life. One area where he had to get used to and adjust was the discrimination against the older population, called ageism. Although Robert had not personally had to face discrimination, he had known people who were treated unfairly just because of the stereotype that they had lacked competence. While learning of this new world or discrimination, Robert for the longest time could not understand fully why people would be completely disrespectful to the older generation.
Starting in 1999 Robert had experienced stages of retirement; he had gone through four stages of retirement. Robert had gone through the honeymoon, disenchantment, reorientation and termination

The text defines body transcendence versus body preoccupation as, “people must learn to cope with and move beyond changes in physical capabilities as a result of aging.”(p. 569, 7th ed.)
2. In my own words, body transcendence versus body preoccupation is the stage where older individuals must accept their body changing and make sure to over come the lack of physical abilities.
3. This concept is suitable for Robert because he has come to terms with what aging does to your physical abilities. Although, he has not given up on his workouts with his dog and has continued to work, though his physical capabilities have begun to decline.
4. According to the text about body transcendence versus body preoccupation, many people in their late adulthood will experience changes to their body. Although many people will handle the changes differently, some will cope and move on with their body changes. Some individuals will continue doing things that they love until the very last minute before their body gives out. Allowing them to enjoy the things dearest to them for as long as possible and coming to terms with their physical change.

According to the text, continuity theory is mainly described for individuals who take a great part in their community. For example, people who take part in church or feeding the homeless can greatly feel an impact by the continuity theory. Especially individuals who are greatly appreciated by their community and what they do for it.

2. In my own words, ageism is when a person is directly discriminating against an older individual.
3. Ageism does not personally suit Robert but he has seen his fair share of discrimination against older people.
4. According to the text, ageism is when someone is directly discriminating against someone of older age. Ageism is created in many ways such as negative attitudes and the suggestion that the individuals are not fully in command of their mental awareness. It has been proven by multiple attitude studies that older adults are viewed upon as having less competence and attractiveness than younger adults.
