Some latchkey kids feel that they are not loved because their parents leave them at home alone. Some children do not understand that the parents have to work in order to provide them with the basic necessities. The only thing that the child may think is that the parent would rather work instead of spending quality time with them. According to Brown, Ph.D, & Newnam, B.A, (2005) of the William Gladden Foundation, “communication is the key to helping latchkey kids feel emotionally secure”. Brown. & Newnam go on to say that “Latchkey kids often need added reassurance that they are loved and that their ability to handle self-care responsibilities is valued” (Brown, Ph.D, & Newnam, B.A, 2005).
