Last Week Article Summary

As John Oliver is expressing in his show Last Week Tonight he is explaining the inequality in Puerto Rico and how they are one of the most poor countries and how poverty has taken over so much of this area. While he is explaining this the video goes into a side clip where it has a variety of different news stations reporting about the issues of poverty in Puerto Rico as well as speaking out about their debts (1.22). The mass media covering this story really expresses inequality for people in poverty stricken countries as the higher more structured economy system are reporting about them and how they are struggling with national debt that they cannot pay back as it shows different shots of homeless people in the streets (1.43). Which is an example of an individual occupation that is creating conflict theory as the the doctor that feels his Max Weber prestige should be receiving more money, so they leave in search of a better placement for their high income prestige. After viewing this video, I have now realized the sociological reasoning behind the mass media and all it entails. That the news often attempts to give inequality to those people in need or countries that are smaller than their own often attempt to point out all the flaws to the smaller country yet, would not do anything about it to fix the problem and the solution is a mystery. I believe the mass media blows certain sociological ideas out of proportion with the topics they cover and how they cover them. Understanding sociology helps me see that the mass media is a place for inequality to occur with the higher and lower classes; as well as, seeing the globalization differences that too often are seen as negative. This effect in my opinion is through the sociological outlook on the mass media and how they almost attack everything that is not what they see as the ‘perfect society’ and helps me understand the media connection to
