Last Speech Class

Improved Essays
Considering this was the last speech I had to complete, I knew that I needed to put all of my resources into developing it. As for outside assistance, I thought it was extremely helpful to have time over the course of a few classes to develop it fully and get the opinions and advice from fellow classmates. Being able survey the class and gain their specific opinions on my topic put a lot less pressure on me and helped to be sure whatever I was doing fit the criteria. To start, because this was my last speech for this class, I started practicing early to get a head start. I studies thoroughly to have all the information I needed to use. Unlike previous speeches, I practiced for days, rather than just one day of practicing. This allowed me to memorize my speech a lot better, considering this was the biggest speech of the whole semester. I reworded this speech the most by far out of the others to be absolutely positive …show more content…
I used to have to make my speeches shorter than the time limit just because I knew my nervousness would add an extra minute or so. I consistently went over the time that I would record when I was recording at home. However, this time, I actually was so in control of my emotions that I went under the time that I had originally recorded. I was a bit disappointed that I could not manage just fifteen more seconds, but I was more proud of myself that I was able to present with a completely clear mind for once. I feel that I have come a long way from the very first presentation and found confidence and skill in the process, for which I am very grateful. Though like usual, as I progressed through my speech I had to look at my notes more since I was more practiced when it came to the first half of the speech, I found myself calm enough to look much more at the audience that I would have previously. In fact, I think the only significant flaw, in the fact that I had not intended to do so, was accidentally skipping one

Out-of-Class Speech Critique For my out of class speech critique, I went to listen to Josh Birnbaum talk about his experiences as photographer for Illinois’ wheelchair basketball team. In his speech, he talked about the struggles that the team faced on the way to reaching their goal of winning a college national championship. Furthermore, Josh documented the lives of the players and showed the audience the struggles they faced every day, but showed us how each of them overcame the obstacles. Additionally, he talked about the life long relationships he made with the player by going out with them and practically being a member of the team.…

    1. I believe there were some positive aspects of my speech. Firstly, I was not a nervous when speaking in front of the audience. This allowed me to have the speech flow smoother than last time. I was not expecting the audience to be as large as it was this time; but I think the increase of people might have helped easy some of my anxiety.…

My goal was to get up to the podium, give my speech, and use the inflections and tones I intended for the speech. I would say I was pretty successful in doing so. In a few spots I lacked the tone I wanted, but for the most part, and the important parts, like the sarcastic bits, I did use inflection that was necessary. My pacing was a little off at points, but I expected that to happen sooner or later since I was nervous. I also wanted to incorporate rhetoric, without making it an extremely emotional, more a fact based speech, which I feel accomplished.…

Good public speaking skills are rare, it takes a lot of practice and experience to express yourself fluently in front of a crowd. To me, a great public speaker is one who can put their words together in the simplest way possible, so that every spectator can understand the message. Also engaging with the audience in order to keep their attention. The last good speech I heard was by Congressmen John Lewis back in October here on campus, he had great stories, was very informative and didn’t hesitate to engage the audience. I would be bothered if a political candidate used profanity in the middle of a speech because it is extremely unprofessional, I would not want that person to represent me or my community.…

Out in the animal kingdom, there were only three ways to defend ourselves: fight flight freeze Let's look at freeze first: have you ever had it happen where something unexpected happens and your mind goes blank, you can't think of a thing to say. You'll find that in those few seconds that your mind is blank you also cannot move a muscle. This was a great defence mechanism out in the animal world when we faced a sabre-tooth tiger - we knew we couldn't fight it and live. We knew we couldn't out run it. So we froze, hoping it wouldn't see us.…

When creating my informative speech, I had decided to go back and reread Chapter 11 in the textbook. This helped me to decide on what the speech should include and how it should be organized. Also, I decided to keep the speech brief, but include all the required information as to not sound like I was rambling on. Before I delivered my speech, I decided to go online and watch a few videos on public speaking and speech presentation. This helped to give me an idea on how I should speak and present my speech.…

Practice makes perfect as everyone has heard this saying before. In the future, I plan on practicing my speeches more by speaking in front of a mirror over and over again to give myself the impression of what I look like when speaking in front of a group of people. Practicing in front of a mirror over and over again will also help me memorize my speech more instead of relying on my note card as often, giving me more confidence while speaking. I tend to use my note card as a comforting thing when I get nervous and forget what I am about to say. It gives me the chance to collect my thoughts and remember what I was going to say as well as staying on track of where I was going in my speech.…

However, I personally felt nervous as I was talking. This was reinforced by feedback I received which said “you seemed slightly nervous at first but then as confidence grew the teaching became increasingly better.” I felt this was due to a lack of preparation and could have easily been resolved by practice and repetition. Also, next time I will prepare some notes to prompt me and to ensure I do not forget to mention any important details the students may…

Overall, I was extremely happy with the effort my group put into this project. In terms of attending the group meetings, everyone was present and participated in the discussion. The first meeting took place on a Sunday afternoon at Baruch and the second meeting took place on a weeknight in the form of a Google Hangout. The times and places of these meetings alone displayed every group members’ commitment to the project, effort to accommodate for scheduling conflicts, and effort to ensure they are contributing their fair share to the group regardless the time or day of the week. At these meetings, we discussed ways to engage the crowd and critiqued each other’s slides and presentations.…
