Last Six Years Research Paper

Should high school last for six years? That is a question that has many people arguing. There would be many different outcomes if high school did last six years. In my opinion I think high school should stay with the four years mainly because I really don't want to go to school for an additional two years. However, I can see some positive outcomes if high school does last six years. For example, I would be able to spend more time with friends during school before we all split up into colleges. Another reason is that I would gain more knowledge about things academically and socially. It would give teachers more time to teach us things that we would need to know before we go in to the real world. It would also relieve some stress by letting teachers …show more content…
Those are some of the reasons why I would not enjoy having school for longer than it has to be. There is a high school in Brooklyn that last for six years and President Barack Obama visited the school and was very impressed. After that event, an article in the New York Times was about whether high school should last six years. In the article there were six debaters who were talking about the situation and most of them were fairly similar. They were mostly stating that is should not last six years. There was one person that I agreed with the most and his name is Jeffery Jenson, the author of "Emerging Adulthood: The Winding Roads From The Late Teens Through The Twenties" and a research professor of psychology at Clark University. He says that they shouldn't extend the length of school but instead should inform students about their options and opportunities after high school. Some of the quotes that he uses that I strongly agree with are: "I worry that not enough of them (students) are aware of what they need to prepare themselves.", "College does not have to be for everyone, especially the four-year college."

Five Years of Benefits When people think of a person who took a fifth year in high school they think of failure, miss credits and many similar problems, but actually no one really looks at the beneficial side of a fifth year. It can allow a student to become more aware of programs, life paths and career choices which is extremely important. Therefore, the high school program should extend to five years instead of four because it allows students to obtain more education and gain more life skills. People say that grade twelve is enough education for students, but actually in an extra year of school many things can be taught and learned. Firstly, an extra year of high school opens up more learning opportunities for students.…

They believe the work load will easierly overwhelm year 7s and cause stress which is bad for their well being. There is also the fact that high school can cost around 3 times the cost of primary school. This means parents will have to pay for 6 years of high school instead of 5 and could mean for some parent wouldn’t be able to afford the cost and will have to send their children to school which don’t have a good reputation. Being a year 7 at primary school gives you a lot of freedom and responsibility without the difficulties of high school research show that almost a quarter of people who start high school fail to finish year twelve and by adding the pressure of high school to year 7s could have disastrous result that could end in more children dropping out of high…

People these days think that students are not learning enough in school. The school thinks it is a good idea to shorten vacation time and go to school all year round with longer breaks. On the other hand, other people think that it is a bad idea to do this because students usually learn things out of school during summer break. The school year should not be lengthened because it stresses adolescents out, it will make them feel pressured, and it does not give them an opportunity to expand their horizons. Students need a break from school after their school year.…

David Tyack and Elizabeth Hansot on “Differentiating the High School: the boy problem” defined what was the boy problem during the twentieth century. Boys at that time were doing much worse than girls and the rate of dropouts were higher for boys than for girls. Many administrators argued that boys had a greater desire to earn money for the home than girls, since it was the man stereotypically the ones that provided for the household. Also peer attitudes that stressed work over schooling contributed to make boys leave school. Teachers, along with administrators, thought the same, because boys apart from the reasons just explained were more often characterized as lazy, and/or embarrassed not to pass than being mentally incapable.…

All year schooling is a very good idea because there would get more frequent breaks, more information can be learned, more time can be spent on topics, students could take more classes, and faculty meetings would be less frequent. Having breaks more frequently could make it so students would actually like going to school. Students families could take trips in other season so students would be less likely to miss school to go on vacation with their families.…

Children, all over the world, will benefit from a new modified year-round school schedule. Year-round schooling will prevent loss of knowledge over the summer, stop summer boredom, and create the opportunity for kids to get right back into it at school after break. In the United States, as of 2014, there are only 3,181 schools that have the year-round schedule, 10% of public schools have this option, and only some of the 46 states’ schools run this way. Year-round schooling should be held at all schools.…

Some school districts offer new programs that allow high school students to graduate in three years instead of the traditional four years. Some schools allow students to enroll in the new program, so the pupils can graduate at faster rates. Many students agree that high school is challenging as is, and the new program will make it harder. I believe that schools should not offer the new program because it will be stressful on the students, it will occupy all the time a student has, and it will take valuable memories away from the student.…
