Last Man Out by Mike Lupica is a 245 page realistic fiction book. It is a realistic fiction book because what happened in the story could happen, but it did not. According to Booklist; In the best tradition of sports writing, this will leave readers both breathless and thoughtful. The book is intended for young adults, ages 10 and up because there are some sad, serious parts and a character dies. Tommy Gallagher is one of the main characters. He is a 12 year white boy who is brave and one of the toughest kids on his football team. His father, Patrick Gallagher is one of the other main characters. Tommy hears a fire truck and thinks of his father. His mom tells the coach while Tommy is on the sideline they have to go because of Patrick. They get to the hospital and Patrick dies from being burned after trying to rescue a child from a fire. Tommy gets to his next football game against his rival, Wellesley. In this game, Tommy gets into a fight. Off the field, Tommy finds skateboarding as a hobby to keep his mind off his father. He goes skateboarding at a small park in Boston with his friend Mike and figures out he can do cool tricks if he practices. Tommy’s team wins their final game to get to the championship game against Wellesley. Tommy gets on a skateboard with Mike and they grab onto the back of a shuttle bus on the Boston college campus. Tommy loses his grip and balance and flys Into a pole, separating his shoulder. Tommy cannot play in his championship game. While watching the game, Tommy makes a few calls and ends up being the reason the team won. The main conflict in the story is when Tommy’s father dies and Tommy has a difficult time dealing with his death. The resolution is when Tommy becomes good at skateboarding, which becomes a new hobby for him and distracts him from his fathers death. The theme in Last Man Out is to never give up because when his father passed away, he could have given up and he did not. He stuck with football and helped his team win against a rival team
