The tragedy of Las Vegas relates to the concept of sociology in the sense that it centers on the concept of anomie in which the social norms are broken down and lost in a period of chaos and disobedience. In a situation in which deviance result in a complete chaos such as the one presented in the article in the tragedy, it is easy to depict the act of deviance and lack of respect to the rule of law. The costs involved in such tragedies are massive, and they include massive loss of life, psychological problems, and financial costs (Burrell & Morgan, 2017).
From the perspective of sociologists and in the context of functionalism of deviance, defiant behaviors impact negatively and positively on the society. From the article, the society can

Author, Joan Didion, wrote to the Los Angeles notebook about the events of a Santa Ana to describe to others that had not been there what develops. Within her text, Didion writes using person pronouns such as “we, I, and us” to include herself with the people who experienced the storm first hand. She also uses colloquialisms including “Route 66” and “Cajon/San Gorgonio Passes,”information only people that live in or have visited that area would know. Her explicit audience is to people that live in the California but may not have experienced the storm themselves while her implicate audience would be to the people that had not been in the storm. As Didion describes the strange occurrences that happen in the preparation of a Santa Ana, she works…

Hunter S. Thompson is an American icon and literary legend. Best known for his book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, his style of journalism is distinct and popular. It is no surprise, if a bit unorthodox, that ESPN would run a piece by him in the aftermath of September 11th. To quote Cheech Marin for Newsweek in 1996, five years before the September 11th attacks, “the imprimatur of literary eminence means Thompson … [is] respected,” and this explains how an article that that decries “all hope for Peace in Our Time” and states that “We are At War now” with a “mysterious Enemy” can still be so well written, so on-the-nose, and receive such a large platform (Marin, 1996, and Thompson, 2001). Thompson has obviously led a fairly colorful life,…

Showgirls have been the face of Las Vegas for a long time, but has been slowly dying throughout the years. In Jack Sheehan column “To Honor Las Vegas, Respect the Showgirl,” published on April 21st, 2013, in the Review-Journal, he explains why he thinks the face of the iconic showgirl is dying in Las Vegas. Sheehan, who has lived in Las Vegas for about four decades, wrote an opinionated piece, that needed more supporting facts. “To Honor Las Vegas, Respect the Showgirl,” was structured well, but was not very convincing because he did not give any reasons why the showgirl legacy was diminishing. It is also written from a male perspective because most females do not want to be seen as just a male fantasy.…

While psychology is the primary emphasis in the show, sociology also has a large contribution to explain the BAU’s profile, the criminal’s actions, and the affects the crime has on the larger society. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream by Hunter S. Thompson chronicles Raoul Duke and his attorney Dr. Gonzo in their search for The American Dream. Duke is Thompson’s alter ego and Gonzo represents Thompson’s actual attorney, Oscar Zeta Acosta. The setting, Las Vegas, is very economically significant, especially in the early 1970s where its buzzing economy and money are the focal points of the non-stop city. Believing The American Dream has decayed into a disgusting state of consumerism, ignorance, and misery, they try to find any sort of remanence of a more ideal American Dream—one filled instead with love, peace, and compassion. Most of the world has been sucked into the materialistic life with relatively no regard for anything besides themselves and their possessions.…

Every morning, I make a cup of café con leche and tune into channel 5’s jingle of Matt Goss’ “Lovely Las Vegas” at 5 am before I get ready to make my way Downtown — a modern piece of the desert amidst the heart of the valley. As I look up at the street after struggling to untangle my headphones on my way to the bus top, I encounter new faces and wonder where they are going. My destination is seeing the sunrise appear with the silhouette of the Stratosphere Casino on one side of the field and the Downtown skyline on the other as the bus drops me off on 7th Street to complete my long morning routine – only to repeat the same journey the next day. There are days in which I would like to skip out on my morning walks to catch up on a couple minutes…

Meta-fiction is a huge part of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, really the whole book is meta-fictional. Thompson is telling the story of a trip he took at a different time, with a lot of imagined details thrown in. In the text there are countless examples of different meta-fictions, but perhaps the most important one is the illustrations throughout the book. Again, pretty much every illustration is it’s own meta-fiction, but one in particular stands out in my mind, the one with the caption that reads “As your attorney I advise you to slow down- I can’t keep up man!” This image, like all images in the book is drawn in a very cartoonlike manner, which is important because it helps to distort reality even farther.…

This ‘crime’ is not a phenomenon that can be easily defined according to an objective set of criteria. Instead, what a particular state, government or a collection of social forces defines as a ‘crime’ in any society or historical period will expose the interests and influences that are present by such forces during that time. Conventional theories of criminology typically regard crime as the product of either ‘moral’ failing on the part of the people who are labeled as “criminal”, genetic or biological tendencies towards criminality possessed by such people, “social injustice” or “abuse” to which the criminal has previously experiences, or any combination of these (Agnew and Cullen, 2006). All of these theories regard the “criminal as deviant,” a perspective offered by authorities as inherently legitimate, though they may differ in their assessments of the matter of how such “deviants”…

Throughout these last few weeks I have learned a lot in this class. What I have learned has made me think more about the world around me, broadening my mindset. I was very excited to take this course because my favorite course in high school was sociology. I knew I would like this course because I am interested in the material and it allows me to think outside of the box. I really like how it isn’t as cut and dry as other subjects may be; sociology allows you to have an open mind.…
