College: What it Was, Is, and Should Be by Andrew Delbanco (2012) provides a comprehensive chronological overview of higher education from its origins to the present day. Upon reading the title I assumed the subsequent pages would drag on about the failures of higher education and list a fool proof way of correcting said issues, I am happy to announce I was incorrect. In the book’s six short chapters Delbanco manages to take us back in time and review the origins of higher education in order to better understand where we are today. In the first three chapters Delbanco reviews the evolution of college, which originally stirred from religion, and became the way society groomed young men of age. In 1886 founding president of John’s Hopkins stated that college should always be a place for the development of a student’s character (p.42).…

I live day to day, going through the works: wake up at the ungodly hour of six A.M., make it through my classes, two hours of volleyball, finally go home, repeat. But, in between all of the rushing, the yelling, the stress of high school, is when I get to relax. It’s when I get to forget about school, or as I call it “college auditions” and when I can just have a nice time without having to weigh the pros and cons of every thing I do. Every day, after the last bell rings, I navigate through the throngs of intimidating upperclassmen. It’s like The Hunger Games, stay calm, keep your head down, and try not to piss anyone off.…

I was 10 years old, playing in my third season of football, and my first ever game under the bright lights surrounding the high school stadium. The time had finally come, the lights had been on and warming up for several minutes, I was going to play a game under the lights on the high school field. My experiences that night were not forgotten, but today I couldn’t even tell you if we won the game that night. The lessons I learned that night weren’t about winning and losing, I had done plenty of that already in my life.…
