Las Meninas

The picture “Las Meninas” which was created by Diego Velázquez is a well-known work of art, and for good reason. It’s considered one of the relatively few masterpieces due to both the complexity and the quality of the art. The artist may have known the people and characters he is representing within the painting, and the room used may also have been a known location to the artist.

The painting uses distinct differences in value to bring focus to certain points. Emphasis seems to be on the blond haired girl near the center of the painting. She’s painted with mostly lighter values than other places in the painting, giving the appearance of natural light being shone on her. The artist also gave the four other people near her the appearance of

What were the people represented in the painting dealing with at the time? The girl in the center is clearly someone important, probably some sort of royalty. The girls around her seem to be her maids or helpers. The artist is perhaps the artist of the drawing, but then what is he painting? Could he be painting the piece we are viewing known now as Las Meninas, or something other than this? The man in the open doorway in the background is looking back as though something caught his attention or startled him. In the background appears to be a mirror with two figures in it, but I don’t see anyone looking at the mirror unless they are behind the view given by the artist - maybe even the painting he is working on within this painting. Due to the central location of this mirror, perhaps it is reflecting the images of someone important. This would make sense if the painting the artist is working on is indeed what is being reflected in this mirror. Art like this painting captures imaginations with these sort of questions. The history behind the painting is known, but we’re still able to appreciate the scene this artist has laid out for us using paint, canvas, and a

Tastefully developed and carefully curated, The Meadows Museum at Southern Methodist University now holds one of the largest collections of Spanish art outside of Spain. The museum prides itself on displaying widely diversified paintings, a statement I do not fully agree with. Although the two-story museum’s walls are furnished with with a wide variety of subject content there is a chauvinistic sense about their collections. I am not saying there is an unequal ratio of male to female portraits because there isn’t. The museum has a plethora of women as subjects, but they only seem to only display women painted by men.…

In the following essay I’m going to compare and contrast two 17th century artworks – “Las Meninas” by Diego Velazquez (1656) and “The Allegory of Painting” by Johannes Vermeer. Paintings depict artists working on a portrait, however, in Velasquez’s work the viewer is the person who is being painted and in Vermeer’s the viewer is just an observer of the artistic process. The only reason the observer knows that he is the center object of the future fictional painting is in the mirror on the back wall. The couple in the reflection is King Philip IV and his wife, Mariana. (Foucault, 8).…

Images of the “Virgin of Guadalupe” seem to be everywhere. As a symbol of “freedom for the oppressed native populations” according to Jeanette Favrot Peterson author of The Virgin of Guadalupe: Symbol of Conquest or Liberation?, the Virgin of Guadalupe seems to be a reoccurring piece of art starting at the middle of the sixteenth century. A very unique piece in its own the “Virgin of Guadalupe” by Miguel Gonzalez in 1698, is part of Spanish colonial art but also consists of different techniques to emerge into a world where countless of the same image already existed. Miguel Gonzales created an image using inspiration by two places, first the image was surfacing throughout Mexico being replicated in the same way as the original. As with most , the trade of goods was involved to create the style Gonzalez used.…

For my art exhibit portion of this essay I visited the Mexic-Arte museum in Austin, Texas. The exhibit consisted of different paintings, photos, film, sculpture, and displays all centered on the Mexican heritage and focused on the Dia de los Muertos celebration. The Mexic-Arte museum has been in commission since 1984, and has been showcasing the cultural artwork since its opening while expanding the amount art work every year. I learned that the museum also holds street parades during Dia de los Muertos to commemorate and spread the Mexican culture throughout the city of Austin on 6th street. The action takes place outside the city in front of a large boulder, and there is a church seen in the distance. The mood of the painting is very bleak and dull. The purpose of this painting is to commemorate the Spanish’s resistance against Napoleon during his occupation of Spain in 1808. This painting is also used as a political protest against the Bonapartist government. I like the fact that Goya made a reference to Jesus Christ in his painting. I also like the fact that Goya is trying to enlighten the viewers to the atrocities that a tyrannical government could commit if it comes to power. My only criticism of the painting is its lack of inclusion of women and children.…

The young woman is dressed in a breathtaking lace white wedding gown, and jewelry paired with white gloves, and in the background of the image there are men standing around in fine black suits. When first viewing this piece, the eyes tend to catch on the young woman’s face. Her white dress and face seem to be the focal point of the painting because they are the brightest element of this painting, and the rest is filled with more neutral colors and dark tones. The eye catches on the bride’s sorrowful countenance, showing her discomfort with being married away to her much older groom. Both the bride and groom are…

In this essay I will compare and contrast using contextual factors two murals. The first is Emperor Justinian, Bishop Maximus and Attendants, a mosaic on the wall of the Sanctuary in Italy from the Byzantine era. The second being Raphael 's School of Athens, found on the wall of the Apostolic Palace, Rome painted during the Renaissance. Emperor Justinian, Bishop Maximianus and Attendants, was created for religious purposes, as was a lot of the art produced during the early Byzantine Empire. In 324 CE Constantine ‘ the Great’ was a Christian emperor who set up Constantinople, originally Byzantine, a city in the east as another city to rule Christianity from, alongside the capital Rome.…

The Las Meninas portrait is complex and involves Baroque characteristics. Not only is it very painterly in the way that it just lets highlights and the brushwork sit on the surface, not blended in, but at the same time it involves a tonalistic approach to the shading with shades of white turning into gray and eventually to black. Las Meninas is also complex with the subjects and objects within the work. The portrait or mirror in the Las Meninas work is the same scale as the Las Meninas work and it’s very mysterious in its nature.…
