Teenagers trust their doctors. They do not expect them to violate them or harm them in any way. Doctors are supposed to be a safe place and are supposed to help and heal. Larry Nassar is not one of those doctors. He raped and sexually assaulted over 156 women, most of them as teenagers and children. Many of the family members and friends of the victims ask themselves, “Why did I not notice?” So how can friends and coworkers of people like Larry tell someone these crimes are happening and how can the United States as a whole prevent this from happening again?

Every student has to go through sex education in schools as a way to inform student on safety and STD prevention. This is amazing but the key to safe sex is consent which is not taught in a majority of schools. According to a survey sent out by Planned Parenthood, “Less than a third of people were taught anything at all related to consent, sexual assault, or healthy relationships in middle or high school.” This lack of education is what is causing young people to be unprepared when the time comes to say no or ask for consent. They are not begin taught that no means no in all circumstances. Among the small number of people who had been educated about consent, according to Planned Parenthood, less than twenty percent of them were taught how to ask for consent. Girls and boys are not being taught how to say no to men like Larry Nassar. This puts pedophiles at an advantage, as their victims do not what to do in a situation where this has happened to them. The first step victims of these heinous crimes need to take is reporting the crime to the police. Nearly seventy percent of victims do not report this to the police due to fear or embarrassment (Realities of Sexual Assault on Campus).
