Larry Barnica Research Paper

Larry Barnica is my grandfather. He is 87 years old and is married to Illa Sue Barnica. During the early years of my childhood they have always been known as ‘Papa’ and ‘Grammy’ and they are still called that today. Because Papa is so humble, it took awhile for him to start. He thought it would be better if I asked Grammy to tell me about herself, but she managed to get him to talk. And that’s where we go from here. Larry Barnica was born on February 23, 1933, in Big Springs, Nebraska. He was one of the youngest out of his family. Papas’ mother was Ella Nora Lindauer, and his father was James Ray Barnica. The two were born only a day apart; Ella on November 19, 1900, and James on November 20, 1900. Papa told me that his grandpa Barnica would always give him a nickel and his grandma Barnica would always cook pies and cookies for him. My grandpa also told me about his mother's parents, Grandpa and Grandma Lindauer, would take him into town or plant stuff in the garden. When Papa was 15 he went to the Wentworth Academy in Lexington Missouri. He was placed in the ‘B’ company. At this time the United States were picking groups of people to go to Korea and fight in the Korean War. Papa was lucky enough to be picked for a different purpose though. He was sent to construction basics, and afterwards he was taught how to perform tasks with structural steel. My grandpa was sent to Alaska on a boat that had thousands of Canadian soldiers. They arrived at Kodiak island and Papa was amazed how the boat split through the icy water like nothing. The rest of the soldiers went on to South Korea. From there, Papa recalled a time where he was on a train traveling to Fairbanks and they stopped constantly because the moose would get on the tracks. But, during this time, Alaska was not a state
